PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis
● Plants make their own food by
photosynthesis.
● This process is a chemical
reaction that uses light energy

● The word photosynthesis

comes from the Greek
language:
1) ‘photo’ means ‘light’
2) ‘synthesis’ means ‘putting
together’
Photosynthesis Equation
Energy Transfer

● Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll - a green substance found in

chloroplasts in green plant cells and algae
● Absorbed light energy is used to convert carbon dioxide (from the air) and
water (from the soil) into a sugar called glucose.
Uses of Glucose

➢ Used for energy

➢ Stored as starch
➢ Used to make proteins and other organic substances
➢ Changed to sucrose for transport

Why glucose is stored in the form of starch?

PLANT AND
WATER
Water for support
1) Plant cell store a lot of
water in their vacuoles.
2) Turgid cell–
• contains water in the
cell (strong and firm).
• Makes the whole plant
firm and well-
supported.
3) Flaccid cell –
• loses water and
becomes soft and

Why are flowers so colourful?
Reproduction
Reproduction is the biological process by which new
individual organisms – "offspring" – are produced
from their "parents".

POLLINATION

● Pollination is the
transfer of pollen
grains from an anther
to a stigma.
Does the pollination occur only between
two flowers of same type?
Does that mean pollination occurs between
two flowers borne on the same plant?

place?
