Define Terms and Place
a picture on the term
on each slide
Triangles
A plain figure with three straight sides and three
angles
Square
A plane figure with four equal
straight sides and four right angles
polygon
A plane figure with at least three
straight sides and angles, and typically
five or more
Beams
A long sturdy piece of squared timber
or metal spanning an opening or part
of a building, usually to support the
roof or floor above
Columns
An upright pillar, typically cylindrical
and made of stone or concrete,
supporting an entablature, arch, or
other structure or standing alone as a
monument
Struts
A rod or bar forming part of a frame
work and designed to resist
compression
ARCHES
A curved symmetrical structure
spanning an opening and typical
supporting the weight of a bridge,
roof, or wall above it.
Strength-to-weight
The strength of the material divided by
the mass(also commonly referred to as
weight, on planet earth) on the
material
Civil Engineering
Somebody who practices the
application of planning, designing,
constructing, maintaining, and
operating infrastructure.
Support
be able to hold up heavy weight
Tensile Strength
Resistance of a material to break
under tension
Butt Joint
A joint formed by two surfaces
meeting at the same point(Angle)
Lap Joint
A joint made with two pieces of metal,
timber, by cutting the thickness in half
at the joint and connecting
them(Fitting them together)
Tension
The state of being stretched tight
Compression
The action of compressing or being
compressed
Shearing
To have or be cutting something off
Weight
The quality of being heavy
Deflection
The action or process of deflecting or
being deflected
Lateral Force
Forces that act across a structure
parallel to the ground.
Bridge Design
Trusses
Find Trusses on the
internet and Finish
drawing them as a
simple bridge
Howe Truss
Warren Truss with
Vertical supports
Pratt Truss
Baltimore Truss
K truss
King Post truss
