CHARIS COMMUNITY

December 5, 2022
INTRODUCTION

The Charis Community is a non-government office that aims to help lessen the toxin in
the environment by recycling recyclable materials such as plastics, rubbers, metal and many
more. The Community started its journey last 2016 when some members of the community
once visited a tourism area and they saw furnitures from recyclable materials. They saw how
much potential waste are deducted and turned into something usable. Since then, they started
to collect recyclable and usable materials to sell and create funds. They have already created
sofa sets, bags, sleeping mats, pots for plants, and many more.

The Community has been actively participating in many activities that supports and
promotes the presevation of the environment. Its goal is to combat the rising issues of climate
change, pollution, and many other environmental threats and they wanted to start in one of the
major problems that seems to be unsolved - waste.

Charis Community has helped many out of school youths earn money by recycling
waste and turn them into something usable. They started with the packs of juice, coffee and
other drinks to be created as bags and pouches and now they have shifted to using old tires
for building furniture or sofa set. The community has build its credibility over the years and has
already worked with different organizations such as Greenpeace Fund and Earthjustice.
RATIONALE OR BACKGROUND

The Philippines is a wide country with a population of 111 million. With that number in
mind, it is obvious that the country’s problem with waste remains unsolved. Even in a small
community, the weekly waste that the garbage collectors of the city collects is already
unimaginable.

According to Inquirer.Net, the Philippines is named as the fourth top waste generator in
Southeast Asia and one of the top polluters in the world. This was even exacerbated by the
pandemic due to the increased healthcare waste from the use of face masks and other
personal protective equipment, as well as single-use plastics from food deliveries and online
shopping. Around 1,400 metric tons of health care waste was generated every day from June
2020 to April 2022, according to the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB). It also
projected that from 2022 to 2025, the country’s generated waste will reach 92 million tons in
total.

In connection to this, the Community is planning to hold “May Pera sa Basura” as part
of promoting the ideals of the community to make use of recyclable wastes and create
livelihood for the out of school youth. This will create chances for the youth to exhibit their
creativity and create usable crafts that can be used in our homes, school and day to day tasks.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Objective of the Project

The goal of the project is to help the youth create livelihood from recyclable materials.
Through the efforts of the people in our chosen community, they will collect the garbage and
other residual waste in the community that can be used to upcycle reusable materials such
as plastic bottles and cellophane.

Upcycling is a process of transforming waste materials, unwanted products, and

other by-products into new or better materials.

Methodology
1. This project will be initiated at all areas in Dacutan.
2. The out of school youths will be invited for an orientation.
3. The team from the Community will set a one day event to collect all waste
including the non-recyclables in and around Dacutan.
4. The waste collected will be segregated. The non-recyclabes will be properly
disposed and the recyclables will be cleaned and assesed for other potential
use.
5. The final product shall be used and sold in the market.
