The paradigms of
Chemical Engineering:
The new frontiers
- What is a paradigm?
- Current paradigms of chemical engineering
- The pre-scientific stage
- First paradigm: unit operations
- Second paradigm: Science of chemical engineering
What is a
paradigm?
- Is a set of assumptions governing
how we interact and interpret the
world. Every human has a personal
paradigm which is influenced by
outside forces acting on them and
their own experiences in support of
the paradigm.
The 3 stages of the CPI

paradigm
Pre-Scientific stage
Random techniques

Man exerts his action on the most

immediate nature in a random
way.
Pre-Scientific stage
Systematic techniques

The chemical processes followed typical

linear scaling procedures of those
carried out in the laboratory; that is, to
adapt laboratory processes on a large
scale.
The unit operations paradigm

The processes ceased to be studied and

designed as a whole, in accordance with
the practice of industrial chemistry, and
evolved through the study of their
individual stages, scientifically based and
independent of the type of process, which
are repeated in all of them. In this way,
the object of study of some branches of
engineering, which were the subject of
controversy, was precisely identified.
Second Paradigm: Chemical Engineering
Science

Science is directed at investigating "what

is" and predicting what "may be."
The engineering sciences also include
other characteristics related to their
application: "what for", "how", and "how
good".
Engineering sciences involve
multidisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity
for the study of an object.
Conclusion

The training of the chemical engineer must include the traditional approach,
the vision of the new frontiers of the profession and the application of new
techniques and teaching-learning methods.
The first paradigm operates on 3 scales: micro, for research and development;
meso, for equipment design; and macro, for process design.
The chemical engineering science paradigm operates at 3 scales: molecular,
meso and macro.
