Essay 1 Reflection

Something that I learn in my 1301 class, and I use in the first essay in my 1302 class was

to know my audience. For example, when I was writing essays in High School, I usually write

for me. I know the topic, the background, and interesting things, so usually I did not explain

these things in my essays, but in ENGL 1301 I learn that my audience need to know this too,

they probably are not expert in this topic, so I need to give context. This is something I

implemented in my first essay for ENGL 1302, “It is necessary to address that the subject of the

experiment have a routine of waking up at 5:00 a.m. for school.” (Alvarez, 1), if I did not add

this, my audience will not understand the impact that waste the time in social networks have in

the subject. Another thing I learn, with the company of other classes too, is the MLA format. I

present so many works with this format that now I used unconsciously. I even learn how to make

an annotated bibliography in my UNIV ll class, sadly I don’t have examples of this project that I

made last semester. However, this was a huge help for me, when we needed to make an

annotated bibliography for this essay, I did not feel stressed because I least I have the basic

information needed.

In addition, I consider that in ENGL 1302 I learn how to make a research paper, how to

use the introduction, method, and results. I have never made an essay who needed a section

named “Method”, this was something new, and I think this will be needful in other courses such

as my Geology class. Another thing I learn in this course that will be helpful for another of my

courses is how to cite correctly in MLA, and how to know when an article is peer reviewed, this

will be helpful in my next courses such as History and Communication. Is something will be no

applicable about what I learn in ENGL 1302? I do not think so, everything learned it would be

helpful in some way, maybe I do not know in what would be helpful yet, but I know everything

learn in this course would be necessary eventually.

I think that create an experiment with outside research help me improve my writing in

have a more complex vocabulary, I usually write using: “I, me, in my opinion”, but this time I it

was crucial that I did not used these words. Second, in realize an experiment, do not get me

wrong, I have realized some experiment for my science classes. However, this paper was the fist

time I write realizing an experiment but also, with the help of peer reviewed articles. I think my

writing skill will improve with the help of this knowledge, how to write my results correctly,

how to use the ideas from other authors.

Further, some of my strengths are that I count with so much information to put in my

paper, in ENGL 1301, believe me, I always was short of words. Another strength is that the main

point of my essays is straightforward, my sentences are well structured, my vocabulary is

extensive, and is interesting to read what I write. Still, I count with some weakness like some

grammar mistakes. It was a huge improvement for me because with ENGL 1301, I use to have so

many weaknesses, such as my sentences were not well structured, and my topic was no clear.

Something I would consider as the most challenging from this essay would be to know

where to add my peer reviewed articles, it was my first time using them, so it was challenging for

me. However, I consider this essay as one the easiest to understand and work on it.
