Standard/benchmark:
 Standard :  5.1.4.7.1 Respond  Analyze and construct interpretations of artistic work

Benchmark: select artwork, objects or artifacts that share a common idea or theme.

Objectives:
 students will describe  two different types of art work.
Students will  create an art work of their own and compare it with their peers.
Students  will write  about  what they draw.

A list of materials: a village painting by jane wanjeri ( village chore), Two paints of this
artist. Papers, paper stripes, colors  and scissors. Sample of self portrait sample.

Procedure:

T: students today we are going to look at an image and try to describe what we see.

S: students are listening.

T: present the village image to the students.

T: What do you think the theme of the image is?


S: answers may very( I think  the theme is people working).
T: what do you notice?
S:  children, adults,  houses, tress and animals 
T: What do you see that makes you say that?

T: what else did you find?


S:  people are playing

T: What captured your attention?


S:  The houses that have different structure 
T: what does this image  brings to mind 
S: students  answers  may vary.
T: how does is it make you feel?
S: students answers may vary  this section will take 10 min
T: what does it remind you?

S: students will have 10min to describe the type of elements they in the art piece.
T: Next students let's draw own self portrait.
T: students will have papers , paper stripes, color, pencils and scissors and sample of self
portrait that I made for them to look at and they will have 15 min to complete

S: students starts drawing.


T:  students list what you use.  For example what colors you choose 
T: walks  around to help students.

T: After your are done share with your peers.

S: students are sharing with their peers 

Assessment: Students will pair and share about the art work they made.
students will have quiz 8 written question about their art work
I will see how well their art that they made is complete.

This activity could be apart of social studies unit when the students are learning about different

kinds of cultures around the world. Students can talk about what colors, shapes , texture of the

piece of the art work. This activity exercise visual literacy skill because students can look at the

piece of the art and talk about what kinds of things they see. For example the type of the

weather students see and were they think this picture was taken.
