ASSIGNMENT-1 Chapter- Chemical reactions and equations

Question 1. Study the given diagram and answer the following questions :
(a) Write the chemical reaction involved in the process.
(b) Mention the colour of :

1. copper powder and

2. the substance formed after heating it.

(c) How can we reverse the above reaction ? Write the equation for the reverse

reaction and state the substance that undergoes oxidation and the substance that
undergoes reduction.

Question 2. A water insoluble substance ‘X’ on reacting with dilute H2SO4 released a
colourless and odourless gas accompanied by brisk effervescence. When the gas was
passed through water, the solution obtained turned blue litmus red. On bubbling the gas
through lime water, it initially became milky and the milkiness disappeared when the gas
was passed in excess. Identify the substance ‘X’ and write the chemical equations of
the reactions involved.

Question 3. A strip of a metal X is immersed in the aqueous solution of salt YSO4 blue
in colour. After sometime, a layer the metal Y from the salt solution is deposited on the
strip of the metal X. Whereas the metal X is used for galvanisation, the metal Y is
employed in making electric cables.

1. Predict the metal X.

2. What could be the metal Y ?
3. Can yon name the salt YSO4 ?
4. What is the nature of the chemical reaction taking place ?

Question 4. A compound `X` is used for drinking, has pH =7.Its acidified solution
undergoes decomposition in presence of electricity to produce gases `Y` and `Z` The
volume of Y is double than Z. Y is highly combustibl whereas Z is supporter
of combustion .Identify X, Y & Z and write the chemical reactions involved.

Question 5. An aqueous solution of metal nitrate P reacts with sodium bromide solution
to form yellow ppt of compound Q which is used in photography. Q on exposure
to sunlight undergoes decomposition reaction to form metal present in P along
with reddish brown gas. Identify P&Q . Write the chemical reaction & type of
chemical reaction.

Question 6. You are provided with a container made up of aluminium. You are also
provided with solutions of dil HCl, dil HNO3, ZnCl2 and H2O. Out of these solutions which
solution, can be kept in the aluminium container? Name the type of reaction taking
place.

Question 7. A student has mixed the solutions of lead (II) nitrate and potassium iodide.

(i) What was the colour of the precipitate formed? Can you name the
compound? precipitated ?

(ii) Write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction.

(iii) What type of reaction is it?

Question 8. A zinc plate was put into a solution of copper sulphate kept in a glass
container. It was found that blue colour of the solution gets fader and fader with the
passage of time. After few days, when zinc plate was taken out of the solution, a
number of holes were observed on it.
(i) State the reason for changes observed on the zinc plate.
(ii) Write the chemical equation for the reaction involved.

Question 9. A reddish brown vessel developed a green colored solid X when left open
in air for a long time. When reacted with dil H2SO4 , it forms a blue colored
solution along with brisk effervescence due to colourless & odourless gas Z.
X decomposes to form black colored oxide Y of a reddish brown metal along with gas Z,
Identify X, Y, & Z.

Question 10. Observe the following activity & answer the questions

a. Do you observe anything happening around the zinc granules?

b. Is there any change in its temperature?

c. Why is glass tube not dipped in dil H2SO4?

d. How is H2 gas collected by downward displacement or upward displacement of water?

e. Is H2 gas soluble or insoluble in water?

f. Is H2 gas heavier or lighter than air?

Question 11. Marble statues often slowly get corroded when kept in open for a long
time. Assign a suitable explanation.

Question 12. A magnesium ribbon is burnt in oxygen to give a white compound X

accompanied by emission of light. If the burning ribbon is now placed in an atmosphere
of nitrogen, it continues to burn and forms a compound Y.

(a) Write the chemical formulae of X and Y.

(b) Write a balanced chemical equation, when X is dissolved in water.

Question 13. On heating blue coloured powder of copper (II) nitrate in a boiling tube,
copper oxide (black), oxygen gas and a brown gas X is formed

(a) Write a balanced chemical equation of the reaction.

(b) Identity the brown gas X evolved.
(c) Identity the type of reaction.
(d) What could be the nature(acidic, basic or neutral) of aqueous solution of the gas X?

Question 14 . Give the characteristic tests for the following gases

(a) CO₂
(b) SO₂
