Lesson Plan in Science 7

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. Identify and describe respiratory systems and its parts.
b. Outline the process of gas exchange.
c. State the importance of respiratory system.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Human Respiratory System
b. References: On Science 10 (book)
Unit 1, Chapter 3 pg. 103-105

c. Materials: Visual Aids, PowerPoint presentation, video clips, board and pen

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. ENGAGE

1. Prayer
Let us all stand and Ms./Mr. __________ please lead “Heavenly Father, we praise you today
the prayer. because you are so great, we glorify you and
we lift you up to the highest because of the
things that you have given us. …”

2. Greetings
Good Morning class! Good Morning Ma’am

3. Checking of Attendance
Is there any absent today? None

4. Exercise
Before we proceed to our discussion and
activities let’s have our energizer first.
Okay, everyone please stand up and follow what
the duck instructed in the video clip.

[the teacher will play a short video clip] [the students will follow]
Okay! I think everyone’s nerves and cells are awake now!

5. Motivational Activities
Lung Durability [the students will follow]
Students will work in pairs to measure lung
capacity. Each pair of students will compete. Whoever has
the longest hold of breath (inhale) will be called a healthy
person. The student who will win will have a secret price.

Okay class I have a few questions for you. In the activity

you did earlier,

What do you realized about having a healthy

respiratory system?

And how can you keep your respiratory system

healthy?

B. EXPLORE

1. Presentation

Okay, from our activity earlier, what do you think will be

our lesson for today? Anyone?

Yes, Ms. /Mr. _______, Respiratory System

Very good! Let’s give Ms./Mr. ______ a “dinosaur clap”

Yes! Our topic for today is about Human Respiratory

System.

C. EXPLAIN

1. Discussion
Who among you knows what Respiratory System is?

Yes! Ms./Mr. _________? The respiratory system is the network of

organs and tissues that help you breathe. It
includes your airways and lungs.
Yes, that is correct.

The organs of the respiratory are the responsible

for the body’s gas exchange, bringing oxygen into the
body and getting rid of carbon dioxide.

Who can provide me an example of a respiratory Mouth, Nose, Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea,
system’s organ? Diaphragm, Bronchiole etc.

Yes Ms./Mr. ____________?

Excellent!
I have here a picture of parts of human body
responsible for human respiratory system.

Parts of Respiratory System

First, we have Mouth and nose: What is the function

of these organs in Human Respiratory System?

Yes, Ms./Mr. ______? It allows air to enter our body.

Great! Let’s give Ms./Mr. _________ ‘ang galing galing
clap”

Mouth and nose are the openings that pull air from
outside your body into your respiratory system.

Next is Larynx?
It produces vocal sounds.
Yes, Ms./Mr. ______?

Yes, that is correct. Larynx is commonly called as the

voice box and it prevents the passage of food and
other foreign particles into the lower respiratory
tracts.

Next is the Pharynx or throat: What is pharynx? A tube that delivers air from your mouth
and nose to the trachea (windpipe).
Yes, Ms./Mr. __________?

That’s right, pharynx or throat serves both the

respiratory and digestive system by receiving air from
nose and air, food and water from the mouth.

What about the trachea?

It is a passage connecting your throat and
Yes, Ms./Mr. _________? lungs
Excellent! Trachea carries air in and out of your lungs.
As air pulled into the trachea during inhalation, it is
warmed and moisturized before entering the lungs.
Next is the bronchial tubes?

Yes Ms./Mr. ________? Tubes at the bottom of your windpipe that

connect into each lung
Correct! when a person breathes, air comes in
through the nose or mouth and then goes into the
trachea (windpipe). From there, it passes through the
bronchial tubes, which are in the lungs. These tubes
let air in and out of your lungs, so you can breathe.

What about the Bronchi?

Yes, Ms./Mr. ________? Bronchi carry air to and from your lungs.

Very Good! Bronchi are the main passageway into the

lungs and at the end of the bronchi, the bronchioles
carry air to small sacs in your lungs called alveoli.

So, what its function of alveoli?

Yes, Ms./Mr. __________? The tiny air sacs in the lungs where the
exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes
You’ve got it right! Also, it is where the lungs and the place.
blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the
process of breathing in and breathing out. Oxygen
breathed in from the air passes through the alveoli
and into the blood and travels to the tissues
throughout the body.

Next is the lungs. What do you think lungs do?

Yes, Ms./Mr. _________?
The two organs that allows us to breathe.
Very Good! The main function of the lungs is the
process of gas exchange called respiration. They bring
oxygen into our bodies (called inspiration, or
inhalation) and send carbon dioxide out

What about the diaphragm?

Yes, Ms./Mr. __________?
It is the muscle that helps your lungs pull in
air and push it out.
Yes. Thank you, Ms./Mr. _______. When you breathe in,
your diaphragm contracts and flattens, moving down
towards your abdomen. This movement creates a
vacuum in your chest, allowing your chest to expand
(get bigger) and pull in air.
And lastly, what is the function of the ribs?
Yes, Ms./Mr. _________?
Bones that surround and protect your lungs
That is correct. The purpose of the rib cage is to be the and heart.
attachment for our respiratory muscles in order to aid
in breathing, as well as, serve as a protective shield
for the vital organs

Good job! Everyone.

Movement of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide In and

Out of the Respiratory System

So now, let’s find out the movement of oxygen and

carbon dioxide in and out of the respiratory system.

First the oxygen-rich air from environment enters the

Nasal cavities (mouth and nose) - Pharynx Trachea –
Bronchi – Bronchioles – Alveoli – Oxygen and Carbon
dioxide exchange at alveoli – Bronchioles – Bronchi –
Trachea – Pharynx – Nasal Cavities – Carbon dioxide-
rich air to the environment

2. Generalization

How do you think can we maintain a healthy

respiratory system?

Do not do the things that can harm your body

like smoking. Eating healthy foods, drinking
lots of water and doing exercises. Adding
plants to your home to increase the oxygen
and air quality in our living areas.

D. APPLICATION

So now, let’s have an activity.

I will group you into 4 groups and each group has students will follow
different task to do. Group 1 will draw the Human
Respiratory System, Group 2 will give the function of
each organ (names of organs are given) then Group 3
will label and put the functions on the side of each
organ and the Group 4 will explain the movement of
oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of the
respiratory system.

I will give one point to each correct answer you’ve got.

Good luck kids!
E. EVALUATE

Before we end our lesson for today, let’s have a short

quiz. Get one whole sheet of paper and answer the
following:
I. Direction: Read the following statements carefully.
Identify the correct answer to each question. Answer Key

oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of
breathing in and breathing out.
_________5. A thin skeletal muscle that sits at the
base of the chest and separates the abdomen from the
chest.

II. Enumeration Answer Key
