1. (12 points total – 3 points each) True of false. If the answer is False, you MUST
explain why, in order to receive full credit for the answer. (Write True or False as your
answer)

i) As one of design considerations for aerobic composting process, the carbon to

nitrogen ratio (C/N ratio) is an important component, which should be in the range of
15:1 to 25:1.

ii) Belt-Filter Press is the continuous-feed sludge dewatering device that has chemical
conditioning, two porous moving belts that has a gravity drainage zone and
mechanically applied pressure zones.

iii) Centrifugal dewatering process usually gets the higher cake solid concentration with
the raw primary sludge than with the digested waste activate sludge.

iv) For chemical conditioning, chemical requirements is generally greater with the raw
primary sludge than with the digested waste activated sludge.

2. (10 points) Write the characteristics of Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion

(ATAD), and the advantages and disadvantages of ATAD.

3. (10 points) Volatile acid concentration, pH, or alkalinity should not be used alone to
control a anaerobic digester. How should they be correlated to predict most effectively
how close to failure a digester is at any time?

4. (10 points) A digester is loaded at a rate of 400 kg COD/d. Using a waste-efficiency of

70 percent, what is the volume of gas production when SRT = 35 day? Assume Y = 0.1
and b = 0.02.

5. (20 points total) In anaerobic digestion process, it is known that approximately 0.4 m3
of methane gas per kg of ultimate BOD stabilized will be produced at 35oC and 1 atm
by using Glucose (C6H12O6) as ultimate BOD.

Show how to derive the m3 methane gas production per kg of ultimate BOD under
anaerobic condition (i) (10 points) at 0oC and 1 atm, and (ii) (10 points) at 35oC and 1
atm, respectively, by using glucose as BOD.

Hint: Balanced equation for converting glucose to methane and carbon dioxide under
anaerobic condition is as follows: C6H12O6 → 3CH4 + 3CO2

below, calculate how many kg of air required per kg of sludge will be for its complete
oxidation.
