What is
Photogrammetry surveying?
● Photogrammetric surveying/photogrammetry is the branch of surveying in which
maps are prepared from photographs taken from ground or air stations to interpret
geology,classify soils,crop and etc.

● Making precise measurements from photographs

● It may employ high-speed imaging and remote sensing in order to detect, measure
and record natural and man-made features on earth.
● Objects are measured without being touched
Types of Photogrammetric
Surveying
● TERRESTRIAL PHOTOGRAPH
● AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH
Terrestrial
Photogrammetry
● Camera station is in a fixed position / near the ground
● Handheld or by using tripod (DSLR or smartphone)
● Also taken by a phototheodolite (combination of a
camera and a theodolite)
● Needs less investment and technical skill to carry out
● Processing is done in the office/post-production
process
● A preferred method when designers and planners want
to survey pipeline networks, transport network, etc.
The axis of the camera takes care of the area surface to
be covered.
Terrestrial Idea :
Photogrammetry

Points needed to be photographed to get

the whole model of building

Real life example:

Result

Surveyor taking a picture of the facade each steps he take

Aerial
Photogrammetry
● Photographs taken from an Aerial camera mounted on
an aerial vehicle ie. plane
● Nowadays drone is used to replace aeroplane because
it’s much cheaper and less risky
● Mainly to extract information on the ground surface
● camera station in the air with the axis of camera
vertical or nearly
● 2 directions, (vertical, oblique) photograph
● Vertical photographs (closely resembles a map)
● Oblique photographs ( like a 3D view of the
surrounding) (low, high oblique)
Aerial
Photogrammetry

Vertical photograph Oblique photograph

(better for map and plans) (better for perspective)
