SDC SAMPLE PAPER

TERM-2
ENGLISH CORE
SECTION-A: READING (14marks)
1. Read the passage given below carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Donated Organs and their Transportation

Once an organ donor's family gives its consent and the organs are matched to a recipient,
medical professionals are faced with the onerous challenge of transporting organs while
ensuring that the harvested organ reaches its destination in the shortest possible time. This
is done in order to preserve the harvested organs and involves the police and especially the
traffic police department.

5. The traditional method of transporting organs by road is referred to as a “green corridor".

This process entails police escorting an ambulance, so as to move around traffic-usually a
specific traffic lane is chosen and all signals on the route stay green to ensure it to reach its
destination in the shortest possible time.
10. A ‘green corridor’ is a route cleared and cordoned off by the traffic police to ensure the
smooth and steady transportation of harvested organs, on most occasions, to those awaiting
a life-saving transplant. Organs tend to have a very short preservation time, such as the
heart which has to be harvested and transplanted within four hours or the lungs which can
be preserved for only six hours once they are harvested.
15. The first green corridor in India was created by Chennai Traffic Police in September
2008 when they accomplished their task of enabling an ambulance to reach its destination
within 11 minutes during peak hour traffic. That organ saved a nine-year-old girl whose life
depended on the transplant.
20. Similarly, such green corridors have been created by traffic police of various cities such
as Pune, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, etc. Personnel are stationed at selected points to divert,
control and clear the traffic giving way to the ambulance. Apart from this, a motorcade of
police vehicles accompanies the ambulance ensuring that it does not face any problems.
Delhi Traffic Police provided a green corridor from IGI Airport to Institute of Liver and Biliary
Sciences in Vasant Kunj for transportation of a liver. The distance of 14 kms was covered in
11 minutes.
25. Experts point out the lack of a robust system to transport organs to super-speciality
hospitals in least possible time. National Organ &Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTT) the
country's apex organ donation agency, is now framing a proposal to airlift cadaver organs
and will send a report to the Union Health Ministry. "Cadaver organs have a short life and so
transplant should be done within a few golden hours." Director (NOTTO) expressed,
"Therefore, we are preparing a proposal for airlifting organs at any given moment."

30. Most states do not have enough well- trained experts to retrieve or perform transplant
procedures. Also, there is an acute shortage of advanced healthcare faculties to carry out a
transplant. So, it is referred to other big centres in metropolitan cities. Organs retrieved from
Aurangabad, Indore, Surat, Pune are sent to Mumbai as these cities do not have super-
speciality healthcare centres, informed officials.

35. "In India, about fifty thousand to one lakh patients are suffering from acute heart failure
and need heart transplant at any point of time. In a private set-up, a heart transplant costs
Rs.15-20 lakh which is followed up by post- operative medication of about Rs.30,000 per
month lifelong.

Dealing with nervousness can sometimes be a difficult thing to do. When you feel
nervous, you tend to lose control to some extent. You can start to shake and tremble
a bit or you can start to sweat and even get a bit dizzy. It may seem like a bad thing
but this feeling that you experience is your body's way of telling you something.
Nervousness is a signal to your mind that you need to get ready. It can sometimes
be mixed with the feeling of excitement as well.

5. There are many situations that can cause a person to feel nervous. It can be a situation
where you are about to make a speech, appear for an interview or take an exam. All of these
things can bring out that feeling of anxiety. t can cause you to stumble on your Words. It can
cause you to make a fool out of yourself in public. It can cause you to just plain freeze up. It
can even cause you to turn around and go back the way you came from.

10. However, there are ways and means by which you can learn to control
nervousness and use it to your advantage. The first thing you need to do is
understand the reason for your nervousness. Most of the times when you get
anxious, it means that you aren't as prepared as you think you should be. Often
when it's our first time doing something that is outside of
15. our comfort zone, we will feel a bit nervous but after we have done it over and
over, we feel more confident about it. In other words, in order to feel less nervous
about whatever is causing you to feel that feeling of nervousness, you need more
practice. There is a difference between feeling nervous because you aren’t prepared
and feeling excited because you're anxious to show what you can do.

20. We often get nervous because we are afraid of what others might think of us.
You don’t have to worry about that because more often than not, people are too
concerned with their own selves to focus on your faults. According to a study
conducted on Americans, most of the people are afraid of ‘public speaking’.
25. The problem is that we are our own worst critics. American psychologist William
James believes, "Human beings by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can
change the outer aspects of their lives." Visualise yourself doing a great job.
Visualise yourself getting the results you want. Visualise

30. receiving praise and appreciation. Visualisation and affirmations have the power
of bringing about a positive change in your thought patterns. Nervousness is
something that can be dealt with through practice as well as realizing that life is too
short to spend too much time worrying. If you want to do a good job, be prepared,
think
