White board and dry erase marker
Procedures
Introduction to new material (5 minutes)
1. " Alright class we are going to grab our white boards and come to the rug for phonic time. Please get
your white board and marker and take a seat on the rug. Remember we want to sit somewhere we can
be successful."
2. Remember how we have been working on phonemes, today we are going to focus on 2 areas, the first
you will blend and say orally words. The second area is going to segmentation of the words I give you. I
know you all are going to give it your best!"
Direct Instruction- Blending
1. "We are going to blend first. I am going to say the sounds, or phonemes, and you will blend the sounds
together and say just the word. "
2. "An example- /c/ /a/ /t/- and you say cat.
Guided Practice
Teacher says sounds, children respond with word
1. /d/ /o/ /g/ - dog
2. /f/ /a/ /ll/ - fall
3. /j/ /u/ /m/ /p/- jump
4. /p/ /l/ /u/ /m/ /p/- plump
5. /c/ /h/ /a/ /m/ /p/- champ
6. /r/ /i/ /n/ /g/- ring
7. /c/ /a/ /n/- can
8. /b/ /i/ /n/- bin
9. "You guys did so great blending those phonemes. I am very proud of the progress and hard work you
have all put in."
Extension
Students will have access to magnet letters to explore sounds and segmenting words.
Assessment
Formative- Whie students are orally blending, watch the students who are in intervention groups to
monitor success.
Summative- Watch of phonemes being segmented on boards, check intervention students and see if they
need more assistance.
