No Smiles Today
Adapted from No Smiles Today by Cheryl Rao

Sam and Ali are good friends. They are always

together. They share their food with each other. They
are always cheerful.
One day, Sam came into the classroom without
saying “hi” to Ali. She just sat down on her chair and
did not look up. She did not say “Present!” when Ms.
Reyes called her name. She just raised her hand.
Exploration
Are you sick, Sam?” asked Ms. Reyes. Sam shook
her head.
“Are you feeling okay?” asked Ali. Sam nodded
without looking up.
Ali wanted to make Sam smile. He had an idea! He
took out something from his bag. As he ran to show it
to Sam, it slipped out of his hands. Sam saw something
flying toward her and she grabbed it. It was a big,
green, rubber frog! Sam’s eyes flew open. Then she
opened her mouth to laugh.
Exploration

Ali and her friends saw why she had not smiled
or talked all day! Four of her front teeth had gone
missing!
