Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction
Anxiety is a phenomenon that cause of poor academic performance among students.
Students face anxiety when they think they cannot achieve their academics which can
make it difficult for them to complete their schoolwork or study. Anxiety is an emotion
characterized by feelings of nervousness, dread, tension, and apprehension which can
lead rapid heartbeat. Anxiety is having difficulty controlling worry, trouble
concentrating, and feeling weak of tired. According to Ayman Akbar (2021), anxiety
plays a critical role in academic performance of the students. Anxiety Is the feeling of
disturbance while doing some important work. Everybody feels anxious in a daily life
routine. Anxiety affects thinking and behavior.
Anxiety are multidimensional and involve cognitive, bodily, affective, and
behavioural responses associated with concerns about possible negative consequences of
failure (Mammarella et al., 2019). Anxiety is one of the most commonly experienced
feelings of all human conduct. It is an unpleasant feeling of awkwardness, edginess,
alarm or distress. It is also described as the emotional state that emerges from a testing
situation which a person is incapable of handling (Mohammed Abdul, 2020). Anxiety
negatively affects success as anxious students are self-preoccupied, not focusing on their
learning process, had shorter memory span and poor emotional intelligence. Students
with high levels of anxiety are unable to perform at the best of their ability.
(Hashempour & Mirawdil, 2014).
This study is conducted to know about the feelings of students with anxiety and
how it affect their academic performance at Isabela School of Arts and Trades,
Calamagui 2nd, City of Ilagan. Isabela encountered + analysis of survey with two hundred
(200) students.

Theoretical Framework
This study is supported by the theory of Horwitz (1986:125) explain that “anxiety is
subjective feeling of tension, apprehension, nervousness and worry associated with an arousal of
the autonomic nervous system”. Another definition gives by American Psychiatric Association
cited in Horward, R (1972:109), anxiety is apprehension, tension or uneasiness which stems from
the anticipation of danger, the source of which is largely unknown or unrecognized. In addition,
Ellis (2011:401) states that anxiety is feeling of uneasiness and apprehension concerning a
situation with an uncertain out come.
These theories absolutely state that the study anxiety is apprehension, tension, nervousness
and worry about situation with an uncertain out come.

Conceptual Framework

The paradigm of the study shown in figured 1 illustrated the conceptual framework of the
study. This study clarify the relationship of the study anxiety and academic performance of
Grade 11 Students in Isabela School of Arts and Trades. The framed showed the relationship and
the actual pattern that used in the study.

4. Worry

The first frame illustrated study consisting of the study anxiety of the students based on the
following aspects: nervousness, tension, dread, apprehension.
The second frame presented that quarter exam and grade. Both frames show that the Quarter
Exam and Grade are depends on the Study Anxiety of the Students.

Statement of the Problem


This study aim to answer the following questions:
1. What are the different study anxiety of students?
2. What is the level of academic performance of the students?
3. How does study anxiety affect students’ academic performance?
4. Do the study anxiety of students is correlate significant with their academic performance?

Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis was tested in this study. There is no significant correlation in
the variable which is the students’ different study anxiety and level of academic performance.

Scope and Delimitation

The primary goal of this study is to provide knowledge about the different study anxiety
of students. Anxiety can be nervousness, dread, tension, and apprehension. Also, it aims to
determine the level of academic performance of the students. And finally, this study would like
to determine how does study anxiety affect students’ academic performance.
This study is limited to the two hundred (200) Grade 11 Senior High School Students
Isabela School of Arts and Trades School Year 2022-2023, Calamagui 2 nd, City of Ilagan,
Isabela.

Significant of the Study

This study is significant to the following:

Students. This study will provide the students more though understanding of their study
anxiety and academic performance.
Parents. Through this study, parents would be able to know about their children’s study
anxiety and academic performance. Also, parents would be able to engage more of themselves
into the lives of their children.
Community. This study would make the community realize the need for youth guidance.
Future Researchers. This study can be used as a reference material for future research, and
it can also serve as a guide for their research study. Furthermore, this study may provide
sufficient information and data for their research.

Definition of Terms

The terms listed below will provide meaning in order to understand the contents of this
research:

Study Anxiety. The study anxiety is a feelings of nervousness, dread, tension, and
apprehension of students.

Academic Performance. These include students good academic performance and students
awards or achievement.

Multidimensional. Anxiety theory predicts that cognitive and somatic anxiety will
differentially and independently relate to performances.
