The inductive way is the form where you learn something by rules, and for the contrary way, there´s the deductive way which is when by examples, observation, or by watching, you deduce something. In this chapter, we talk about the inductive way for obvious reasons.
RULES AND EXPLANATIONS
First of all, this chapter explains how the rules must be, and I understand them as the functions because in the example the book gives us, they present a class of a teacher presenting the past perfect and how you use first the rule of form before the rule of use, that´s how usually teachers teach grammar, it all by rules. Then it appears a sample lesson, I can´t explain it without make this really large but it concludes that the teacher gave the students a simple rule and the sentence change by it, it´s called the minimal grammar pairs that´s the same to learn pronunciation. I really liked the example of how they transform a simple sentence into a question without moving a word, then they reinforce it by doing multiple samples, then they form a sentence with “did”. Most of the activities presented is take a simple rule and then play with it making a different kind of sentences. It concludes with which of the two ways of teaching grammar is better to understand (inductive or deductive) and it´s inconclusive because we have different ways to learn, but at least we kind of know the best way of teaching it is by rules and they can deduce if something’s missing. Sample lesson number 2 is teaching used to in with the translation method which is often criticized by its efficacy but at least in this case, we can say it´s really useful, it´s shorter and usually we use our first language while you acquire a second language. Sample 3 is about teaching grammar with worksheets. I personally never used this cause I´m really disorganized and if I have papers I´d probably forget them, but it sounds like a fun activity once the students understand what are they working on. The last, lesson number 4: teaching word order using a self-study grammar It´s for intermediate students, so I can understand the kind of understanding they´ll have, but still, I think as there can be students who likes to self-teach themselves, there´ll be someone who does not like it or just don´t get it at all. The ideas are, on the other hand, really good examples of which situations this lesson can be used for an enforcement or just to help them help themselves looking at the books if they have access to one.
