Management of the Esl Classroom

ESL classroom management strategies that can make a huge improvement in your class. From
the beginning of class, I have a set of few rules for the students, as well as clear and consistent
consequences for breaking them. It’s better to be a little strict with them at first and to get the
class started off with a clear structure and good discipline. I will always make sure that they are
prepared to learn the lessons for today and also make sure that they are ready with their
textbooks and exercise books as well.

The easiest way to do this is to simply show an interest in the students' lives. Ask questions about
their interests, be patient and empathetic when they are struggling in class, and look for ways that
you can connect and relate to them. I will always make sure if they are well and have had their
meals on time and also will tell them to share their problems to me as a friend. I will be strict at
the class when learning time and also I will be a friend for each of my students when they need
my help. I will always split them into 2 teams because they like team games and activities to do
when they are learning english.

Fun and exciting activities will keep the class manageable and also the students will be
disciplined and show interest more in the lesson compared to other things. There are few students
who are very quiet and shy in both of my classes. They will rarely participate in the activities,
but once I planned properly and prepared a suitable activity in which they could work as a pair
and as teams, their cooperation and interest began to show to me. In my opinion, the classes
should always be interactive and fun for the students when they are learning new lessons. From
my own experience, if students like you and respect you they will naturally behave well and pay
attention because they want to please you.

At the same time as being firm and fair in class, I will always find opportunities to talk to my
ESL students informally outside of class time. For example, during this pandemic time, we are
not able to meet each other, so I will text my student on weekends and ask about their weekend
routines, hobbies, free time activities and I will discuss with them what type of topics they want
to learn for next week’s classes. My students feel very special because they will let me know that
I’m spending my time talking to them and also I am being strict and at the same time I am being
supportive to each one of them.

Previously, we had a speaking test and I would listen to their speaking where they talked about
me as their favourite teacher and most of the students make a statement that they feel very
comfortable when I am teaching them and also they like learning English because of the fun
activities and games I prepared that attracted them through learning. Mainly,I praise and
encourage my students for each success in their activities or games to boost up their confidence
level when doing something.

ESL classroom games are that they engage and motivate the students . It’s obvious; if a student is
enjoying the learning process then he or she is far more likely to pay attention! It is important
though to choose appropriate games for your class size and classroom configuration. Trying the
ESL games I found that the students like them very much as they keep them fun and enjoying the
whole 40 minutes and demanding to continue beyond the time set. The students were
enthusiastic and motivated to participate fully. After the session I asked them how they felt about
the games and they said, “Really great.” Their good feedback indicates that they enjoy learning
English.

Last but not least, the students will like us as a teacher if we show them the care by taking time

to talk to them and by getting close to them physically. They will like us because we make them

feel good about themselves and learn English through our encouragement and enthusiasm.

Finally they will respect us for our stimulating teaching through the use of ESL games, ESL

stories, songs or ESL plays that tap into all learning styles.
