ASSIGNMENT NO.3: MAGNETISM /20 marks

Question 1

(a) A thin 10 cm long solenoid has a total of 400 turns of wire and carries a
current of 2 A. Calculate the magnetic field inside near the center.
(b) An AC generator consists of 8 turns of wire, each of area A = 0.0900 m2,
and the total resistance of the wire is 12.0 𝜴. The loop rotates in a 0.500 T
magnetic field at a constant frequency of 60.0 Hz.
(i) Find the maximum induced emf.
(ii) What is the maximum induced current when the output terminals are
connected to a low resistance conductor?
(c) A sinusoidally varying voltage is applied cross a capacitor. The capacitance
is 𝐶 = 8.00𝜇𝐹, the frequency of the applied voltage is 𝑓 = 3.00𝑘𝐻𝑧, and
the voltage amplitude is 𝑉𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 30.0𝑉. Find the displacement current in the
capacitor.

Question 2

(a) Calculate the inductance of an air-core solenoid containing 300 turns if the
length of the solenoid is 25.0 cm and its cross-sectional area is 4.00 cm2.
(b) Calculate the self-induced emf in the solenoid if the current it carries is
decreasing at the rate of 50.0 A/s

Question 3

(a) The multimeter read the alternating voltage and current to be 120 V and 10
A at residential house. What are the maximum values of voltage and
current?
(b) In a purely inductive AC circuit, 𝐿 = 25.0𝑚𝐻 and the rms voltage is 150𝑉.
Calculate the inductive reactance and the rms current on the circuit if the
frequency is 60.0𝐻𝑧.
(c) An 8.00 𝜇𝐹capacitor is connected to the terminals of 60.0 𝐻𝑧 source whose
rms voltage is 150𝑉. Find the capacitive reactance and the rms current in the
circuit.
(d) Consider a series RLC circuit for which R = 150 𝜴, L = 20.0 mH, ΔVrms =
20.0 V, and ω = 5 000 S-1. Determine the value of the capacitance for which
the current is a maximum.

Question 4

(a) A series RLC circuit has 𝑅 = 425 𝜴, 𝐿 = 1.25𝐻 and 𝐶 = 3.50𝜇𝐹. It is

connected to an AC source with 𝑓 = 60.0𝐻𝑧 and 𝑉𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 150 𝑉. Calculate
the average power delivered to the series RLC circuit.

(b) In a series RLC circuit, the

applied voltage has a maximum
value of 120 V and oscillates at a
frequency of 60.0 Hz. The circuit
contains an inductor whose
inductance can be varied, a 200 𝜴
resistor, and a 4.00 𝜇F capacitor.
What value of L should an
engineer analyzing the circuit
choose such that the voltage
across the capacitor lags the
applied voltage by 30.0°? The
phase relationships for the
voltages across the elements are
shown in the right figure.
