Inti Raymi

The Inti Raymi, the largest and most important celebration in Peru. This famous celebration
is a Cusco tourist festival that claims the ancient 'Wawa Inti Raymi' ceremony that the Incas
practiced in the city of Cusco, capital of the Tahuantinsuyo empire.

A 15-day celebration begins, starting on June 24, where dances, ceremonies and animal
sacrifices are the main activities.

The realization of the event, 700 people participate on the stage, which is witnessed live by
more than 100,000 spectators.

Where is it celebrated?

The staging takes place in 3 specific sites in Cusco with great historical significance:

Coricancha: The representation takes place in the so-called golden garden. It begins with
the appearance of the Inca. The first offering rituals are coca leaves, llamas, alpacas and
more.

Plaza de Armas: It is cordoned off. The Inca is carried on a litter by eight servants and
performs the so-called Coca Ceremony.

Sacsayhuaman: Main stage of the Inti Raymi representation.

There is a wide variety of Andean traditions, but the Inti Raymi is the most important and
for this reason it is considered "Cultural Heritage of the Nation" since March 2, 2001.
