METHOD STATEMENT FOR
QUANG TRACH 1 THERMAL POWER PLANT / VIETNAM GEOTECHNICALSOIL INVESTIGATION WORK

Borehole drilling

- 22 drilling rig will be mobilized for drilling work.

- The drilling is performed according to ASTM D5783, including as follows:
 Move the drilling rig (For onshoreborehole) or drilling rig placed on jack-up (For
offshore borehole) to marked locations and make it balance.
 Carry out the rotary drilling combined with circularly pumping the solution to move
drilled mud to ground surface and create the borehole. The borehole diameter is 110
mm and diameter of casing pipe is 127 mm.
 Install casing: Casing is used to keep the hole wall from collapsing and to prevent
drilling fluid was losing too much.
 Depending on kind of soil/ rock, the drilling speed is controlled by hydraulic unit of
drilling rig. When reaching the proposed depth for testing or sampling, the drilling is
paused and carried out pumping to clean borehole bottom.
 All information is recorded such as: Borehole name; date; drilling depth; sample taken
depth; SPT depth; description for soil and boundaries between soil layers…
 In case of rock encountering, the rock cores is taken by rock coring bits. After taken
they are placed in the wood box, measure its length and calculate Total core recovery
(TCR) and Rock quality designation (RQD). The rock core also is labeled and
photographed in color prints.
 The drilling is carried out under the supervision by one technician. All information is
recorded by technician such as: Borehole name, date, drilling depth, sample taken
depth, SPT depth, groundwater depth, description for soil and boundaries between
soil layers.
 Boring Depth: The termination depth of the boreholes is in accordance to the required
depth in “Request for quotation”.
 Unsuitable Foundation Strata: Extend all borings through unsuitable foundation strata
to reach hard or compact materials of suitable bearing capacity.
 Fine Grained Strata: Extend boring in potentially compressible fine-grained strata of
great thickness to a depth where stress from superposed load is so small that
corresponding consolidation will not significantly influence surface settlement.
 Compact Soil: Where stiff or compact soils are encountered at shallow depths, extend
borings through the material to a depth where the presence of an underlying weaker
stratum cannot affect stability or settlement.
 End of Borehole: Weathered Rock of 10.0m(SPT N > 50/10cm) or Soft Rock of 5.0m.
 When unexpected results are found, the boring depth shall be changed subject to the
approval by CONTRACTORS ENGINEER.
 During the drilling process, Carry out fully methods to guarantee the sanitation for
environment at survey site. All bentonite solution are collected to nylon bag, handled
according to local environmental regulations. The detail is shown in “item 7. Protection
of the environment” in this method statement.

In this type of strength test, an undisturbed soil specimen is enclosed in a thin rubber
membrane and subjected to a confining pressure. The test specimen is not allowed to
consolidate under the influence of this confining pressure prior to testing. The specimen is
then loaded axially to failure at a strain rate of 1 percent per minute without allowing drainage

the maximum observed deviator stress. The testing procedure will be performed according to
ASTM D2850.
The tests will be done by LoadTrac-II/FlowTrac-II system of Geocomp (USA). This system
combined with the computer via network card control the pressure of cell and then the test can
be controlled automatically from start to finish. The data will be recorded automatically based

This test method provides useful data for determining the strength-stress-strain characteristics
of cohesive soil. During the shear phase following the consolidation phase, the stresses are
varied to simulate the loading applied to soils by construction. This test is performed on three
cylindrical specimens with 38mm diameter and 76mm height.
The soil specimens are fully saturated by using back pressure and then they are isotropically
consolidated at different consolidation stresses by the chamber confining pressures. After
complete consolidation phase, the deviator stress is increased to cause failure of the specimen.
