academic. His parents left school at 16 so
Alfie is going into unknown territory, not
much support from home to focus on higher
education let alone a vocational subject. He
has EDS and uses crutches; his parents worry
that being an artist won’t pay for any
potential healthcare he might need in the
future as well as the usual cost of living. His
surname is derived from Spanish romero
meaning "pilgrim to Rome". This is slightly
symbolic as Alfie is the first of his family
journeying into unknown territory by wanting to
do a creative course in higher education to
become an artist.
Maddie Tolbert 16, female, middle class, very academic but Eve Hoskin
doesn’t have a plan for the future. Her
parents are very high achievers and expect
Maddie to go far in life because she’s so
academically gifted, but she doesn’t actually
have any plans for the future because she’s so
focused on getting the grades she hasn’t had
a chance to find out what she’s interested by
or what she wants to do with her life. Tolbert
– an element of the name is derived from
beraht meaning "bright". Bright as in clever.
Friend 1 They talk to Alfie about their friend in Finland Bee
and how the schools work there
