SPJ Alumni Stories

Mohammed Ashar

Aditya Dhage
Cheryl Pinto (EMBA 2018)

"In 2015, I lost $100,000 because I trusted an 'investment advisor' with my money.
This was my wake-up call to not blindly entrust my hard-earned money into the hands of some
'expert'. This hit me especially hard. Why? Because I was a banker for 15 years by then!
Shamefully, I had very little knowledge about investments or how money worked.

I resolved to become responsible for my own money and dedicated countless hours to learning
how money works. I invested over $40k in self-education, learning how to create my own
wealth, investing and trading in the financial markets. I understood all my mistakes and
completely rewrote my finances, thus redefining my financial future. In 2017, I became a proud
corporate drop-out: leaving the corporate world financially free (I no longer need to work for
money).

The education at SP Jain poised me perfectly to understand how businesses work, and majoring
in Finance allowed me to quickly understand the world of investing. There's also something
special about the bond created in SP Jain! We studied hard but also had so much fun. The class
still meets each other and continues our strong friendships. We call ourselves Paatshaala J.
I've understood that becoming wealthy it's NOT a numbers game but a mind game. To help
spread this message of Financial Freedom and hope, I authored a book called 'Money, Master
the Mind Game'. After migrating to Canada in 2019, we founded Wealth Works Solutions Inc,
which is already a six-figure coaching/training business. The motto of the company is ‘A New
Attitude to Wealth’. We help our clients understand how their money can work for them and
create their plan for Financial Freedom.

I've been honoured to teach Financial Literacy to teens in Canada and the ODM School in
Orissa, India. We've been featured in articles and given numerous talks (including at the Oracle
Corporation) on the mindset required to create wealth. It's our mission to help employees &
entrepreneurs break the shackles of financial slavery and enjoy a life of fun, freedom &
flexibility.

In May 2022, I became a mother to my first baby. A blessed baby boy. It has helped me see the
grossly understated power women hold as life-bearers & life-changers. My vision has now
shifted to empower women to take control of their finances & build wealth for the future.
Because when women have wealth, everybody wins! If anybody wishes to connect, I'm happy
to! IG: @CherylPPinto or Cheryl@CherylPPinto.com”

Parasharan Chari (GMBA 2007)

"The severe and disruptive COVID-19 pandemic was a hard-learnt lesson underlining the
importance of universal access to healthcare. The first step to such inclusivity is making it
affordable. Over half a decade before, when the importance of quality and affordable
healthcare was widely discussed, Ankur Agarwal and I took our first step in this direction by
founding an omnichannel generic medicine retail chain, Medkart, in 2014. Since then, through
our venture, we have been on a mission to make quality medicines affordable.

After we started our business, understood the challenges, identified the available generic
medicine molecules, and interacted with customers, we realised the serious impact of costlier
medicines and the sheer lack of awareness about generics.
For example, some cancer patients refuse treatment due to the higher cost of medicines!
People with common lifestyle ailments such as diabetes and hypertension succumb to or
worsen their conditions for lack of affordable alternatives. The repercussions are countless – all
for medicines remaining costlier. Someone had to change this! Our repeated interactions with
each of our customers only strengthened our motivation and commitment to making quality,
affordable generic medicines widely available.

Eight years down the line, Medkart has a network of 100+ stores in 15 cities of Western India
and a comprehensive online retail portal -- all catering to 6 lakh unique customers who have
collectively saved at least Rs 200 crore on their medical bills. Adding to this, some 6,000 doctors
testify to the quality and affordability of these medicines.

No change is ever easy, and this sure wasn't! Besides scaling up Medkart by identifying the right
target groups and strategy, the mission to make medicines affordable meant changing the
entire ecosystem. Therefore, creating awareness among consumers, informing them right,
pushing for policy changes and implementation to include molecule names and not brand
names of drugs in medical prescriptions, assuring consumers about quality, and ensuring we
build an inventory with a range of molecules that are not just of a benchmark quality and
affordable but also cover all therapies – was augmented in the business strategy. Achieving this
is a work in progress, and we often celebrate small victories, one little change at a time."

About Parasharan:
A young, astute entrepreneur, Parasharan Chari (GMBA 2007) is the co-founder of Medkart
Pharmacy, spearheading its business development, marketing, and operations. Before founding
this venture, Parasharan was the COO at Endeavor Careers, helping MBA aspirants ace their
entrance exams.

He loves spending time with his family and friends and is very passionate about sports and
fitness. In less than 3 years, Parasharan completed 20+ half marathons, multiple 50+ km runs,
and even a 100 km cycling race! Currently, Parasharan enjoys cricket and Karting, among other
sports.

Anchita Majithia (EMBA 2019)

SP Jain’s execution of the program involves simulations and many practical group exercises,
says Anchita Majithia (EMBA 2019). Her article was featured in Shiksha (shared below).

SP Jain Global was always one of the most accredited schools. When I decided on EMBA
without compromising my career, I was torn between IIM-K and SP Jain School of Global
Management. When I visited the SP Jain School of Global Management campus, I the
witnessed a rich conversation on talent retention between one of the students and the faculty,
which left me impressed. SP Jain Global was also the only school offering in-person lectures at
the time, and I was sure it would be a very enriching experience to meet highly experienced
batchmates and faculty, and I was absolutely correct. The discussions in the classroom were
never just theory-based, I always had inputs from my classmates from their respective fields.
Every topic was shown in different lights for different industries. I am glad I chose SP Jain Global
over other schools.

The entrance test was challenging. The practice exams helped in the preparation. The interview
following the written test was focused on understanding of my job profile, my objective behind
getting back to books and the value I can bring to the cohort which turned out to be a great mix
of senior and middle management. To make it to EMBA course, one must be very prepared to
be able to articulate how this course adds value to your career progression, value has to
translate into immediate realization in your career by way of growth and maturity.

My cohort was an excellent group of excited folks who wanted to make full use of the college
life. We never missed lectures and had a lot of fun in participating in all group activities as a
part of the curriculum. SP Jain’s execution of the program involves simulations and many
practical group exercises. They serve excellence in polishing individuals for public speaking,
brainstorming, effective participation in discussions, some healthy debates and overall learning.
The experience me turned me into a critical thinker and pushed me to extract value from out of
daily activities. I understand the importance of being updated and invest in the knowledge no
matter where I am in my career. We had some folks already in very senior management who
were a part of our cohort, proving that learning is always enriching.

Post the course, I am more articulative, collaborative and understand the value of team effort. I
learnt a very important lesson in one of the classes by Dean Gary – Don’t be proud of the
number of years you have spent in an organisation, rather keep evaluating two aspects of your
tenure every year

1. Are you adding value to the organization anymore? What is the incremental benefit of
your association from last year?

2. Is the organisation adding the value to your career anymore? What did you learn over
the previous year which is a skillset that keeps you relevant in your industry?

I think this will always stay with me and I look at my career differently now.

The program helped me tremendously in terms of networking. The classmates were only
helpful to each other at every stage. I was able to find my next job within the Alumni of SP Jain;
switched from a Start-up to Tech Mahindra Ltd and then Capgemini. I have more confidence in
my skill set and a more detailed understanding of when an upgrade in my skillset is required. I
am more focused on my personal growth along with my professional growth and the value I
bring to the table. Overall, the program and my classmates helped me in becoming a sharper,
focused and driven professional who has the resources to undertake challenging roles in her
career.

Anchita Majithia is a pragmatic, self-motivated individual with rich management experience.

Work is an extremely important aspect of her life, getting better than her previous version is
her goal. When not working, she loves her time with her family and pets.

Sachit Swaroop (GMBA 2022)

"The pandemic made me realise that I really need to upskill myself and not continue my usual
work as a Lead Engineer. We know that coding is now being taught in schools so the upcoming
generation will be well-equipped to take on the corporate world, making it difficult for senior
engineers to justify their high pay scale. I wanted to transition myself more towards business
requirements and my dream role was of a Technical Product Manager. I wanted to utilize my
engineering background to bridge the gaps between Business and Technical requirements and I
knew that MBA would be the best degree to align myself in that direction."

Sachit Swaroop is currently working as a Product Manager with Deutsche Telekom, Germany.
He has worked with various companies such as Accenture, InfoEdge India Ltd., Stryker
Corporation. As a Computer Science Engineer, he loves the complexity involved in creating
Digital Products.

Ritish Reddy (GMBA 2012) & Sethu Meenakshisundaram (GMBA 2017)

"We can already see that Automation, AI, and Machine Learning have already taken up the
industry," say Ritish and Sethu.

Ritish pursued an MBA in Advanced Corporate Finance and Banking Management, while Sethu
pursued a global MBA in Marketing from SP Jain School of Global Management.

The one-year course exposed us to the world of business like never before. We were fortunate
enough to be taught and guided by some of the most senior faculties with great experience,
qualifications, and intellect. Moreover, this course was an eye-opener for us in knowing what
we are really passionate about. But beyond that, we would always credit the overall exposure
we acquired from collaborating with some of the best minds across the world. They helped us
build the right skills and prepared us to face real-world business challenges.

Irrespective of their size, today, every business uses multiple software for various purposes
across departments. Out of these, close to 40% of licenses purchased go unused or underused.
But a blurred vision on SaaS and disorganized governance often lead to excessive SaaS spending
and a bloated SaaS stack. This is the problem that Zluri solves. It's a data-driven platform that
helps tech-first companies discover, optimize, and govern their SaaS spend. Zluri helps IT,
procurement, and finance teams to get visibility over the SaaS landscape, and provides them
with usage insights, expense data, optimum pricing, etc., so that they can make the right
decisions in SaaS investments.

Ironically, when we faced the situation of SaaS sprawl back in Knolskape, we realized the
intensity of the problem. What we assumed to be a 50-application SaaS Stack turned out to be
200. The employees had purchased many apps without IT's purview, and most of them had
used the company credentials to sign up for dating and gaming apps, putting the data at risk.
That's when we did more granular research and decided that a SaaS Management Platform like
Zluri is what the world needs right now. That too, after the pandemic, businesses had turned to
work hybrid, increasing the risk of SaaS sprawl. So we felt there couldn't have been a better
time and situation to launch Zluri.

It's a data-driven platform that helps tech-first companies discover, optimize, and govern their
SaaS spend. Zluri helps IT, procurement, and finance teams to get visibility over the SaaS
landscape, and provides them with usage insights, expense data, optimum pricing, etc., so that
they can make the right decisions in SaaS investments.

Technology is a field that is constantly expanding and changing. Therefore, emerging ones are
widely preferred by businesses everywhere, as they need to serve the customers by providing a
solution that stands unique and powerful from the rest.

We can already see that automation, AI, machine learning, etc., have already taken up the
industry, followed by IoT and Big data, which are up to a boom very soon.

Several start-ups are already bringing newer innovations to the B2B space. We will soon see
domestic substitutes for Oracle, SAP, and Salesforce.

So, keeping those in mind, students should know that technology never gets outdated, only
updated. To those who are pursuing it, the only advice we could give is never to think whatever
you know is enough to stay in the industry. Versatile and fast learners who keep updating
themselves are those who become successful in this field.

Getting funding for your business is just one of the milestones in your overall journey. It
depends on the scalability of the business, the total addressable market, and, last but not least,
the right team. Zluri is fortunate enough to have co-founders with complementary skill sets,
which is a big plus for VCs.

Technology was the second biggest area of spending for businesses after people. But it was very
difficult to track where all the money was going manually. According to a Gartner report, SaaS
spending is about to expand by 20% every year, which means this problem will only worsen.
Zluri is an automated SaaS Management Platform that helps IT teams with SaaS visibility,
optimise spending, and manage their SaaS purchases. So, it is one solution for multiple
problems. Zluri got customer traction naturally as it features the most needed use cases, which
thereby attracted investors.

Of course, the MBA shaped our decision-making skills, which is good to have when you have
decided to kickstart your venture.
