VERBAL COMMUNICATION

This is the form of communication which involves speaking with the intention of sending a message to a
listener.

Advantages of Verbal communication

1. It has instant feedback e.g. in a meeting where we have questionnaires.

2. It is cost effective due to the fact that we use space as the medium of communication.
3. Its barriers can easily be overcome because of the direct way of communication.
4. It’s an interactive form of communication hence we can easily understand each other.
5. It’s easier to arrive at a decision because the chain of communication is shorter.
6. It’s the fastest way of raising alerts.
7. It’s easy to use hence no much training is needed such as an assembly.
8. It’s easy to translate and comprehend by the listener.
9. It is easily expressed and in turn easily understood by the listener.
10. We can easily use it as a way to express happiness or sorrow such as emotional music.
11. It cannot be easily duplicated and manipulated.
12. We can revise and replay hence no need to worry about missing any important information.

Disadvantages of verbal communication

1. It is affected by language barrier.

2. You need a translator for the deaf.
3. Requires appropriate medium of communication.
4. It is limited by signal such as television, phones and radio.
5. It encourages noise pollution e.g. mobile advertisement speakers and bars.
6. Requires you to be in sound health condition for instance you cannot address an assembly while
sick or dizzy.
7. It is highly restrictive for instance you cannot use it to apply for a job.
8. Its difficult and expensive to keep its records such as music and movies.
9. You need to be physically available at the time of communication.

Non-Verbal communication

This is the form of communication which involves the use of fascial expressions,eye contact and body
language to send a message to the receiver.

Advantages of non-verbal communication

1. It creates a strong bond between two people involved.

2. Its confidential hence no need to worry about exposure.
3. It exploits the barriers to verbal and written communication.
4. Self-expression is better .
 5. It doesn’t involve noise pollution hence eco-friendly

Disadvantages of non-verbal communication

1. It can easily be misinterpreted.

2. Its hard for you to keep records hence not reliable for future use.
3. Requires special skill and training for instance sign language.
4. It is highly restricted such as during job application it cannot be used.

Written communication
This is the form of communication which involves writing in order to send a message to the receiver.

Advantages of written communication

1. It’s the official form of communication hence much more respected.
2. It offers room for referencing hence proof and backup is easy.
3. It’s easy to keep records.
4. It is highly confidential such as the case of ATM pin.
5. It doesn’t involve sound pollution.
6. Message is received at the time of convenience.
7. We easily spread the message eg through history and billboards.

Disadvantages of written communication

1. It doesn’t favor the blind hence its restrictive.

2. There is delayed feedback such as through letter writing.
3. It can easily be duplicated.
4. You need to be knowledgeable to be able to communicate hence not favoring the illiterate.
5. Its hard to overcome its barriers such as fire gutting libraries.
