Statistical Methods: Calculating Volumes

Collecting, analyzing, and presenting data relies on statistical methods and

analysis. Statistical methods have been defined before as using formulas and techniques on raw

data and transforming the raw data into scientific data. These methods vary depending on

accessibility and time limit for data capture and analysis. It is easier to present quantitative data

than qualitative. However, using statistical methods in calculating volumes of regularly shaped

objects is easier than presenting an analysis of the explanation of the calculation of volumes of

irregularly shaped objects.

Volume is the space occupied by an object with mass. Volumes of figures are calculated

if the figure is in three dimensions. Conversely, regularly shaped objects have formulas for

calculations of their volumes; for instance, for an object in the shape of a ball, the radius is

required and is substituted into the formula of a sphere to obtain its volume (Kaplan Test Prep).

On the other hand, irregularly shaped objects require the use of the displacement method, which

involves much measuring to present the volumes of the irregular object. The displacement

method relies on measuring instruments’ accuracy (Kaplan Test Prep 844). However, irregularly

shaped objects are too involved when calculating their volumes; For instance, calculating the

average volume of ballast made for construction. It requires that a sample is selected and each

element of the sample subjected to the same process of volume determination, which implies that

the process is repeated even more than 20 times to obtain credible and reliable data for research

making statistical methods for calculating volumes irregularly shaped objects more contravening.

The representation of volumes of the regularly shaped object must be more involved in

statistical analysis. Applying the statistical methods extracts information from the raw data used

in researches in assessing the feasibility tests. Compared to regularly shaped objects, it is time-

consuming and demanding to present statistically volumes of irregularly shaped objects.
