REPORTED SPEECH

{used to say what someone else has already said before}

1. REPORTED STATEMENTS:
a) say
A: I can drive.
B: He said he could drive.

b) tell -- requires an object


A: I can drive.
B: He told [me] he could drive.

2. REPORTED QUESTIONS:
a) ask
A: What time is it?
B: He asked [me] what time it was.

3. REPORTED COMMANDS:
a) ask
A: Open the door!
B: She asked me to open the door.

b) tell
A: Close your eyes!
B: She told me to close my eyes.

REPORTED CLAUSES
(In the passive form)
use: to report a general opinion or claim
structure: {it + be + main verb (3rd form)
ex.:
[It is said] people once thought the sun moved around the earth.
[It is estimated] 50% of the population believe in ghosts.
