UNIT 1 – ADMIRING SOMEONE

I am not that kind of person who is usually in awe of people overall. But by taking the trouble to think of
someone to make this writing, I chose some classmates of mine and other students from my college to write
about. I can say I kind of admire them for their hard work, cleverness and determination in the face of medical
school. They will definitely be outstanding and highly successful doctors in their future fields of medical
practice.

UNIT 2 – MAKING A DIFFICULT DECISION

A tough decision I am still supposed to make is the medical field I will follow after graduation. There are some
general major points all medical students are advised to take into account at the moment of deciding their future
medical specialty: work place, work journey, kind of medical practice and kind of patients. In relation to me,
there is only one prerequisite among these important points I’ve been really considering for the time being,
which is the work place. Most of it must take place in a hospital or any other great healthcare center, and not in
a medical office.
Alongside, I am aware of which specialties I really do not intend to do and I detail the reasons for that in
sequence. Firstly, pediatrics and geriatrics because they thoroughly reduce the type of patients that specialists
deal with. Secondly, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology and gynecology and obstetrics due to I do not enjoy
much body systems they treat. And thirdly, pathology, radiology and legal medicine, since their doctors do not
practice medicine by keeping up in face-to-face touch with patients and I prefer a specialty that is the opposite
of it.
Despite these already known areas I definitely will not follow, there are still several ones left I might choose. It
has been hard to decide it, even though I have been easygoing about that. Certainly I am due to make my
decision by the end of college. In fact, I believe I am bound to do it at some point of the internship in the last
two years of graduation, as I will be deeply in contact with all the fields. Overall most medical students only
decide their future over this time.

UNIT 3 – MY LIFE RIGHT NOW

I would describe my life at this moment as fairly unpredictable and thus unscheduled. We have experienced a
pandemic since the beginning of last year and its progress has been completely out of our control – when I say
‘our’, I refer to ordinary people. Additionally, most of the time my daily life basically consists of studying for
college and my everyday schedule is entirely based on the college timetable. Due to the endless pandemic, my
college routine has no longer been the same and therefore I cannot precisely make any arrangements. So all this
unpredictability has got in the way of a fully settled routine. I have been able to adapt my everyday life and
plans to it even though I have felt fed up with all of it. At least this situation has seemed to be heading to
normality by the middle of next year and thereby I will get my schedule set again.

REVIEW 1 – IMPORTANT PEOPLE AND THINGS IN MY LIFE

Among several standing people in my life, I would say some members of my family are the most important
ones. Everything I have become from the beginning is due to the upbringing I got from my mother and
grandmother, just as all the other things anyone else needs throughout life, such as love, affection and emotional
and financial support. Including they are one of the main reasons I can go on studying medicine, both because
they have always supported me in it and because so far I can fully live off them, even though I am already 23 –
once it is practically impossible for a medical student to make a living during the undergraduate degree.
Besides them, I quote one of my aunts and my cousin – this aunt’s son – as quite relevant for me, intentionally
and unintentionally. Intentionally because over the years, as well as my mother and grandmother, they have
encouraged me regarding my life choices, such as what I would do after high school. Unintentionally because I
have spent my whole life looking to them as such a great example of how to achieve one’s ambitions. This
cousin of mine became a judge a few years ago and I could follow his struggle over time to reach such rank,
along with how much my aunt sacrificed herself in order to help him.
To finish, I mention my grandmother’s house as an important place for me. I lived there for most of my life,
from my birth to 17. Thus that is the place I spent my entire childhood and adolescence and then the place I got
all my upbringing, as well as my first bonds around its neighborhood. Indeed, since around 10 days ago, my
home in my hometown has returned to be there, once after my stepfather passed away, my mother had to move
back there.

UNIT 4 – REPORT OF AN INTERVIEW WITH A WELL-KNOWN PERSON

Hey, dear followers! How’s it going?
Last week I had an awesome opportunity to interview one of the greatest artists in Brazil in the last years, Josefa
Josefina. She felt at ease to open her life to me and now I’m here to tell you everything she shared with me.
At first I’d like to highlight how outstanding and accessible she is. I got it! So now let me tell you guys all the
tea.
Regarding her private life, a baby Josefina is nearly coming. She’s due to give birth by 2 months. Her husband
and she haven’t felt like getting to know the baby’s gender. They wanna be surprised at the moment of the
childbirth. Her BFF bet it’ll be a baby girl, though. Besides she claims to be enjoying the pregnancy period and
she’s been getting all the support from her closest people. Followers, I can assure you all she looks stunning and
everything else at all.
Have you heard from Rock in Amazon? I believe so. Breaking news for you, sweethearts! She told me
beforehand she’s opening the first edition of this brand great festival in Brazil. And guess what!? She’s invited
me to attend her show on the backstage really close to her and her teammates. I’m really looking forward to it!
Also she confirmed she wouldn’t allow her motherhood to prevent her from joining this newest Brazilian event.
Dear followers, there are far more news from her to share with you! Keep up with me and soon you all will
know them!
That’s all for today! Hope to see you soon! Bye-bye, XOXO.

UNIT 5 – ENVIRONMETAL CONCERNS

It is quite evident global warming has been one of the major concerns of this century. Badly most governments
worldwide do not seem to be caring about it. Talking specifically about Brazil, in recent years we can constantly
see news about episodes of deforestation, wildfires and air and water pollution reaching terrifying levels.
Unfortunately, it tends to get worse and I really do not go along with the idea that this current Brazilian
situation is simply fault of Bolsonaro misadministration. This trouble has been around us for a long time and it
is quite naïve to think that it is bound to get back to normal once this misrule is over. In closing, I can
reassuringly state unless a true global awareness about all of it is established, we will have been heading
towards a widely alarming situation, both locally and globally.

UNIT 6 – CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS IN MY COUNTRY

In Brazil, unlike many other countries, we do not dump toilet paper into the toilet. There is usually a bin next to
the toilet where we dump it. I personally dislike this custom since it is a little disgusting, just as it is quite
common for the bathroom to get smelly. Once I read somewhere that this happens because the standard
plumbing frame in Brazil is a little narrow and then it is more likely to get clogged.
One more Brazilian custom is about the moment of singing ‘happy birthday’ in a birthday celebration. I always
realize how different this happens in the USA. Unlike there, here we often sing ‘happy birthday’ in a much
more enthusiastic and lively way. I personally really prefer the Brazilian style. It is much more fun.
In closing, once I was watching a Dutch youtuber talk about some different customs between Brazil and the
Netherlands. She said in her homeland whenever they go out to a restaurant for pizza, each one usually orders
his or her own slice of pizza. They are not used to ordering a larger pizza for everyone to be able to share it.
This might even happen in Brazil, but it is quite unusual.

REVIEW 2 – A TIME I FELL OUT WITH A FRIEND

I remember once, as a kid, to fall out with my best friend from my childhood. This guy and I used to enjoy
making up friend clubs at our respective backyards. We even used to build some kind of facilities to shelter us
and the other members, our friends at that time. We also used to charge some fee in order to make some
improvements in our installations. He used to be the leader of it at his backyard. Besides that, once he was
aiming at being the leader of my backyard club. Undoubtedly I didn’t take it and obviously he was too selfish to
accept me as the leader at my own backyard. So we ended up arguing. We only kept a couple of days not
talking to each other though. In the end, we decided to share the leadership, at both his backyard club and mine.
Now I remember it, I really realize how silly all of it was, but I can just recall how outraged with this situation I
got.

UNIT 7 – SOMEONE WHO HAS INFLUENCED ME
Someone who has influenced me from the beginning is my older cousin. He is quite older than me, over 20
years. From the moment I was a child until a few years ago, I had gradually been able to follow him along all
the steps he was supposed to meet in order to become a judge, from law school to the final test of the public
tender. Moreover, his currently path as a judge, which has been remarkable, has influenced me as well. I can
reassuringly state that all of it has been highly significant for me and therefore it has always played a role in my
life decision makings somehow.
Besides that, throughout my current college time, I have been able to get in touch with some quite outstanding
people in distinctive points. There are people really committed with the studies, whose hard work and diligence
have really touched and influenced me. Also there are some people who show great humanity traces and are
spectacularly capable to handle the patients. Undoubtedly, these people motivate me in a way which will really
help me become a better professional in the future.

UNIT 8 – AN IMPORTANT EVENT IN MY LIFE

When I finished elementary school and I was about to get into high school, my mother hadn’t been able to
enroll me at the school I was up for. The reason for it is because, in my hometown, students who live close to
certain public school have the preference to study there, and the school I felt like studying was quite far away
from my neighborhood. In that way, at first I couldn’t go to that school, but after much insistence from my
mother, the principal got hold of a place for me. Most of my friendships I have in my hometown were made
during this period of my life attending that school and, thereby, I might not have met them if my mother hadn’t
been able to get a place there.

UNIT 9 – THINGS I REGRET
I wish I had appreciated so much the moment I was studying the basic subjects at the first terms of medical
school. Most of what I have been learning at the current time of college is entirely based on what I had learned
earlier. Thus at certain point I could be taking so much advantage of the contents I have been seeing now if
some matters had been well fixed in my mind. For example, if only I had dedicated more time to fully
understand how neural physiology works, studying neurology now would not be too tough to me.
By keeping talking about college, I also wish I had got into its band at the beginning of all of it. I really love the
whole work its members do. However, during the first terms, I used to have other commitments at the same
time of the rehearsals and, then, I could not join it. Nowadays I realize I should have dismissed these other
compromises in order to be able to attend the rehearsals.

REVIEW 3 – THINGS I WISH I / IT HAD DONE DIFFERENTLY

I wish I had not bought a ticket for the party I went to last weekend. The party was awful. It rained too much
and nonstop, even as the venue was not covered at all. Therefore, my friends and I had to stand in the pouring
rain during all the party. To make things worse, at a certain moment, the power was out and it kept like that for
almost an hour. Over this time, besides standing in the pouring rain, we had to stand there listening to no music
at all. The party had cost 105 reais, but, given the circumstances, it definitely was not worth it.
To finish up, another thing I wish it had happened differently was my last New Year’s day. As I got coronavirus
on Christmas, I had to spend New Year’s at home doing quarantine. Originally I would spend it at a friend’s
house in my hometown and, unfortunately, I could not do it. However, I did not regret spending Christmas at
my grandmother’s, both because I could get coronavirus anywhere; because there had been too long I had not
been close to my relatives; and because the pandemic scenario had already been under control at that time and,
then, it was relatively safer to get together. Hence, I was simply and unhappily unlucky to get the virus there.

UNIT 10 – SOME FUTURE PLANS

Regarding college matters, I realize it is about time to start reviewing some contents I had learned some time
ago. For example, I really need to look up the abnormal heart listening sounds. I learned them at first in 2019
and, except last year, when I briefly looked them up, I am so far without giving myself a moment to deeply
review them. Thus I intend to do it by the end of this current semester, or, at least, I hope I will already have
done it by the end of the year.
In addition, my college friends and I are bound to travel to Cabo Frio in about 2 months’ time, during our next
vacation. If everything does well, we will be having a good time there on my birthday. I just hope the weather to
be excellent.
Lastly I am supposed to be graduating from medical school and to make my own living about 2 and half years
from now. I do not even need to express how excited I am for this time. I am really looking forward to the
moment I will be able to do whatever I plan without having to ask my mom for money.

UNIT 11 – A COVER LETTER FOR A JOB I WOULD LIKE TO WORK AT

Dear Ms. Smith,
I am typing to you because I am quite interested in working at your business. Since last year, when your
business has started achieving high-level performances, I have constantly been keen on contacting you. I am
doing it just now because I had to wait for the contract at my former job to miss.
You might be asking yourself ‘why should I hire you?’. I have an economics degree, a company management
PhD and a long journey in the labor market as experience. Furthermore, I speak fluently not only English, but
also Spanish and Chinese. By talking specifically about speaking Chinese, you have to go along with me that
this is a fantastic skill I own and, thus, my major differential, given the progressive economic advance of China.
However, definitely not only superb qualifications make a person the right one for a job. You can assure I do
not summary myself simply to them. I am diligent, strong-minded, well-organized, and imaginative, as well as I
am the best team player ever.
Therefore, I am absolutely the member your team needs.
Sincerely, Matthew Rodriguez.

UNIT 12 – GENDER EQUALITY IN MY COUNTRY

Overall, there are considerable differences regarding equality between women and men in Brazil. Some of these
differences can be unfavorable for women whereas others for men. Below I quote one negative inequality for
women and one for men.
I will start by talking about the inequality between both genders in politics. Despite women consist of most of
Brazilian population, their representation in political positions does not follow according to this. Women are a
political minority. In my opinion, this is completely contradictory, because how is it possible women are the
majority of Brazilian population, but also they are so less represented in the Congress and anywhere else?
Certainly I know the reason of it is the historical patriarchal tendency our country has, but it is about time to
change it.
Turning to another matter, the mandatory military enlistment for men, yet non-mandatory for women illustrates
an example of an unfavorable inequality for men. Indeed, I am not in favor of everyone to be bound to enlist. In
my view, both genders only have to do it if it is his or her desire. To conclude it, I even understand the motive
for all of it in the past, but we are no longer there. For me, it does not make any sense our legislation to continue
being like that.

REVIEW 4 – A JOB I WOUD LOVE TO HAVE ONE DAY

I am not going to tell you about my current dream job, once my text would be so obvious and uninteresting. I
chose to write about the jobs I once dreamt with as a child.
First of all, I do remember I used to go to a DVD rental very often on my early days. Whenever I was inside the
store, I got completely fascinated. Thereby I simply decided I would work with it when I grow up. Surely this
idea did not last long, once these conveniences no longer exist like they were in the past. Just a disclaimer, I
believe that if this kind of shop were still popular, I might consider undertaking it in a few years’ time.
After that, I also do remember the time I intended to be a vet, but only for dogs and cats. Definitely the moment
I left this thought aside was when I realized that if I really wanted to be it, I would have to study and even work
with other kind of animals, including fearful ones, such as snakes and so on.
Finally, when I was around the end of elementary school, I decided to be a doctor and, throughout high school, I
was more and more settling this idea on my head. Now I attend medical school and I am graduating from it in
about 2 years’ time. I really look forward to getting my degree and making my own living.
