What is Roof and Property Drainage System?

 The system involve gutters, downpipes, drains, pipes, swales and storage
facilities.
Roof Drainage
 Located at the top of the many branches in a large drainage system.
 Generally discharged directly into the on-site detention/ infiltration facilities or
property drainage systems.
 Because the areas are usually small and there are fewer complications, roof
drainage can be designed using simpler methods than those employed at larger
scales
Property Drainage
 Property drainage is the storm water conveyance system proposed within
allotments
 The drainage system collect water from roofs (via downpipes), surfaces of areas
around buildings and flow onto the public street drainage system.
 The system involves open or closed drain, pipe, sump, swale and on site storage
facilities.
Rainwater Harvesting
 Rainwater harvesting is a technique of collection and storage of rain water.
 In this system, rainwater is collected from roof and gutter system.
 One method of rainwater harvesting is rooftop harvesting.
There have 3 Components:
 Catchment – Rooftop are favoured because of the large coefficient of run-off
generated from them and relatively less likelihood of their contamination.
 Conveyance – Rooftop rainwater gutters and rainwater down pipes from the
conveyance system to transport the water to storage.
 Filters & Storage – From the simplest ground level tank, surface lined ponds and
large lakes storage options are many depending on the context of the rainwater
harvesting design.
Benefit
 reduce water bills
 reduce flooding and erosion
 can be used for non-drinking purpose
On-Site Detention
 OSD may be provided as above-ground storage, below-ground storage or a
combination of both within a property boundary.
Hillside Drainage
• The primary goals of providing proper hillside drainage are:
 To attenuate and control surface runoff quantity while enhancing
total/smooth conveyance of the reduced flow from developed areas.
 To reduce infiltration, erosion/sedimentation and subsequently enhance
slope stability.
Subsoil Drainage
• Purpose of subsoil drainage:
 It increases the stability of the ground and
 Reduces building foundation movements due to the variations in the soil
moisture content
 Increases soil strength by reducing the moisture content
 Protection from water damage
In general, subsoil drains connect either into a storm water pit or an open channel
which is part of a surface water drainage system.
