Self-Evaluation

The case study was a much-needed challenge as I better my teaching skills. Last

semester, as I learned a lot through the case study, but I was wishing to implement lessons for

my student in the areas that needed support. This time, that is exactly what I got to do. It granted

me a very realistic experience as I assessed the student and then formed lessons that targeted the

areas that needed improvement. I think I could have been more intentional about making the

lessons more relevant to his interests and I also realized how hard that can be sometimes. When

the need for intervention is so great, I forget that appealing to their interests should also be a

priority. For the lesson about the welded sounds, I did print out the lyrics to his favorite

Christmas song, “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”, and had him highlight any welded sounds he

saw. I just wish I would have incorporated more activities such as that one that were more fun

for him. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this case study as it gave me great experience delivering

explicit instruction, taking time to get to know one student very well, and learn more about what

it means to teach a student to read.
