Bonding

2
Introduction

Chemical Bond

o A strong attractive force that exists between certain atoms in a substance.

o The type of force that holds two or more atoms together. It is the attraction
between + nucleus and their – electrons.

Physical Bond?

Classification of Bonding based on:

o Bounding or dissociation energies;

o Electronegativity.

3
Introduction

o The dissociation energy is the minimum energy that must be supplied to break
the bond.

o The electronegativity is a measure of the tendency of an atom in a molecule to

attract the shared pair of electrons towards itself.

Example:

Dissociation energy of H2 is 431 kJ·mol−1

H2→2H : ΔE=431 kJ·mol−1

Energy for bonding H−H is −431 kJ·mol−1

2H→H2 : ΔE=−431 kJ·mol−1

Classification of Bonding

Classification of Bonding

o Relatively strong bonds: Chemical Bond/Intra Molecular Bond

o Weak bonds: Physical Bond/Intermolecular Bond

Classification of Bonding

Chemical Bonds
Physical Bonds
o Ionic Bond
o Hydrogen Bond
o Covalent Bond
o Van der Waals Bond
o Metallic Bond

5-How many types of Covalent Bond?

6
The electronegativity values derived by Pauling follow predictable periodic trends
with the higher electronegativities toward the upper right of the periodic table.
7
Electronegativity and Bond Type

As the electronegativity difference increases between two atoms, the

bond becomes more ionic.
