I. Introduction
Have you imagined a world where fractions don’t exist? Let’s face it, not
everything can be counted as a whole. When you’re buying chunks of meat in
the supermarket, ordering partial kilos of rice, adding t he weight of your
baggage, subtracting the calories you ate in some of your favorite food and
anything that involve a part is related to fraction. The significance of fraction
is evident as you go through your day to day activities. So, come and let’s enjo y
learning fractions!
This Learning Activity Sheets was created based on how the learner can relate
to different mathematical problems or situations.
III. Objectives
After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:
1. Add and subtract simple fractions and mixed numbers with or without
regrouping.
2. Write solutions in the addition and subtraction equations of simple fractions
and mixed numbers with or without regrouping.

IV.Discussion
During COVID-19 Pandemic, what productive things did you do to make the
most out of your time while staying at home?
1 4
cup of milk + cup of tea
6 6
1 4 1 4
To find the answer, add 6 and 6. Observe that and are similar fractions.
6 6
1 4 5
+ =

SIMILAR FRACTIONS
The procedure below will help us to easily add fractions with common
denominators. Let’s explore and find out…
1 4 1 +4
STEP 1: + = Add the numerators
6 6
1 4 5
STEP 2: + = Copy the common denominator
6 6 6

DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS
3
Simplify (Write the answer
10 ÷2 5
STEP 4: = in lowest terms)
24 ÷2 12
Mixed Fractions are fractions that have a whole number part and a proper
fraction part.
3 7
Number Sentence: 13 +8 =N
4 12
3 9
13 = 13 (Divide the LCD by the denominator, then multiply
4 12
7 7
+ 8 = 8 the quotient to the numerator: 12 ÷ 4 = 3, 3 x 3 = 9)
12 12
9 7 16
(13 + 8) + ( 12 + ) = 21
12 12
16 16
21 is an improper fraction
12 12
16 4
=1 (To change improper fractions to mixed number,
12 12
divide the numerator by the denominator)
4 4 4
21 + 1 = 22 (Recall that is not yet in lowest term.)
12 12 6
4 ÷4 1
22 = 22
12 ÷4 3

Budgeting is the process of creating a plan to spend your money. Why
is budgeting so important? It is important because it allows you to create a
spending plan for your money, it ensures that you will always have enough
money for the things you need and the things that are important to you.
Following a budget or spending plan will also keep you out of debt.

The chart below shows the fractional part of Lingad’s Family budget that
are spent on several expenses.
How much greater is the fractional part spend on food than in education?

1 1 1
So, - =
8 10 40
Example 2:
3 5
What is the difference between 2 and ?
4 8
3 5
Observe that 2 and have different denominators. Recall that in
4 8
subtracting dissimilar fractions, change the dissimilar fractions to similar
fractions with the least common denominator (LCD) as the new denominator.
3 5
The LCD of and is 8.

Observe that is less than . So, we must rename 5 as 4 .
15 15 15 15
5
How did we rename 5 ?
15
15 5 20
Rename 5 as 4 , then add it to , the result is 4 .
