LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Mathematics 6 - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

I. Introduction

Have you imagined a world where fractions don’t exist? Let’s face it, not
everything can be counted as a whole. When you’re buying chunks of meat in
the supermarket, ordering partial kilos of rice, adding t he weight of your
baggage, subtracting the calories you ate in some of your favorite food and
anything that involve a part is related to fraction. The significance of fraction
is evident as you go through your day to day activities. So, come and let’s enjo y
learning fractions!

II. Learning Competency

This Learning Activity Sheets was created based on how the learner can relate
to different mathematical problems or situations.

It is provided to guide you master the computational skills in adding and

subtracting simple fractions and mixed numbers with or without regrouping.
(M6NSIa-86)

III. Objectives

After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1. Add and subtract simple fractions and mixed numbers with or without
regrouping.
2. Write solutions in the addition and subtraction equations of simple fractions
and mixed numbers with or without regrouping.

IV.Discussion
During COVID-19 Pandemic, what productive things did you do to make the
most out of your time while staying at home?

Read the problem.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected

educational systems worldwide. Our
government decided to temporarily close
educational institutions to contain the spread
of the COVID-19 pandemic. While Marie is
staying at home, she decided to sell Milk Tea
1
to earn money. Each glass, she mixed cup of
6
4
milk and cup of tea. How many cups of liquid
6
did she mix to make a glass of milk tea?

We can use the model approach to present the problem clearer.

1 4
cup of milk + cup of tea
6 6

1 4 1 4
To find the answer, add 6 and 6. Observe that and are similar fractions.
6 6

1 4 5
+ =
6 6 6

2
SIMILAR FRACTIONS

Similar Fractions are fractions with the same denominators.

The procedure below will help us to easily add fractions with common
denominators. Let’s explore and find out…

1 4 1 +4
STEP 1: + = Add the numerators
6 6
1 4 5
STEP 2: + = Copy the common denominator
6 6 6

Simplify or write the answer in lowest

STEP 3:
5 terms if necessary. (Note: The sum is
6 already in simplest form)

𝟓

DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS

Dissimilar Fractions are fractions with different denominators.

How do we add dissimilar fractions?

Determine the LCD. The LCD of 6 and 8 is 24.

Example:

1 2 Note: To determine the LCD, find the LCM of

Number Sentence: + =N 6 and 8.
6 8
6: 6, 12, 18, 24
1 2
STEP 1: + = + 8: 8, 16, 24
6 8 24 24

Get the equivalent fractions or change

1 2 4 6 the dissimilar fractions to similar.
STEP 2: + = + fractions.
6 8 24 24

4 6 10 Add the numerators over

STEP 3: + = the common denominator.
24 24 24

3
Simplify (Write the answer
10 ÷2 5
STEP 4: = in lowest terms)
24 ÷2 12

Note: To reduce a fraction to its lowest terms, divide

𝟓 both numerator and denominator by their GCF.
ANSWER:
𝟏𝟐 10 10 ÷2 5
Example: GCF is 2 =
MIXED 24 24 ÷2 12
FRACTIONS

Mixed Fractions are fractions that have a whole number part and a proper
fraction part.

How do we add mixed number by mixed number?

3 7
Number Sentence: 13 +8 =N
4 12

STEP 1: Determine the LCD. Get the equivalent fractions.

The LCD of 4 and 12 is 12.

3 9
13 = 13 (Divide the LCD by the denominator, then multiply
4 12
7 7
+ 8 = 8 the quotient to the numerator: 12 ÷ 4 = 3, 3 x 3 = 9)
12 12

STEP 2: Add the fractions and whole numbers.

9 7 16
(13 + 8) + ( 12 + ) = 21
12 12

STEP 3: Simplify or write the answer in lowest terms if possible.

The answer contains an improper fraction. Change the improper
16
fraction ( ) to a mixed number. Add this to the whole number.
12

16 16
21 is an improper fraction
12 12
16 4
=1 (To change improper fractions to mixed number,
12 12
divide the numerator by the denominator)
4 4 4
21 + 1 = 22 (Recall that is not yet in lowest term.)
12 12 6

4 ÷4 1
22 = 22
12 ÷4 3

4
Budgeting is the process of creating a plan to spend your money. Why
is budgeting so important? It is important because it allows you to create a
spending plan for your money, it ensures that you will always have enough
money for the things you need and the things that are important to you.
Following a budget or spending plan will also keep you out of debt.

Observe that - are dissimilar fractions.
8 10

How do we subtract dissimilar fractions?

In subtracting dissimilar fractions, we can change the dissimilar fractions

to similar fractions with the least common denominator (LCD) as the new
1 1
denominator. The LCD of and is 40.
8 10

1 1
Number Sentence: 8

Example 2:

3 5
What is the difference between 2 and ?
4 8

How do we subtract a mixed number and a fraction?

3 5
Observe that 2 and have different denominators. Recall that in
4 8
subtracting dissimilar fractions, change the dissimilar fractions to similar
fractions with the least common denominator (LCD) as the new denominator.
3 5
The LCD of and is 8.
