Tutorial No. 8
(DEVELOPMENT OF SURFACES)
Note: (Time: 1 Hour 40 minutes each)
 Tutors to select three to four representative problems to be covered in the Auto CAD evaluation session.
 Tutors to select rest of the problems to be covered in the practice sessions.
[Tutors to discuss this SAMPLE QUESTION in the Session ~20 minutes]
A hexagonal prism, edge of base 20 mm and axis 50 mm long, rests with its base on H.P such that one
of its rectangular faces is parallel to V.P. It is cut by a plane perpendicular to V.P, inclined at 45 0
anticlockwise to H.P and passing through the right corner of the top face of the prism. Draw the
sectional top view and develop the lateral surface of the truncated prism starting from leftmost visible
side edge & in anticlockwise direction. 1 square grid = 5 mm. Solve in first angle.

Q1 A hexagonal prism of side of base 40 mm and length of axis 70 mm is kept on the ground on its base
such that two opposite sides of the base are parallel to VP. It is cut by and AIP inclined at an angle of 45°
to HP and passing through one of its top corners of the prism. Develop the lateral surface of the cut
prism.
Q2 A hexagonal pyramid of side of base 60 mm and length of axis 140 mm is kept on the ground on its base.
It is cut by an AIP inclined at an angle of 45° to the base and cutting the axis at 94 mm from the apex.
Develop the lateral surface of the pyramid.
Q3 A cone of base diameter 40 mm and height 75 mm is kept on the ground on its base. An AIP inclined at
an angle of 40° to HP cuts the cone through the midpoint of its axis. Develop the lateral surface of the
cone.
Q4 A regular pentagonal prism of side of base 40 mm and length 75 mm is kept on the ground on
the base with one of its rectangular faces away from the observer and parallel to VP. A thread is
wound around the prism starting from the nearest corner of the base and is brought back to the
top of the same vertical edge. Find the minimum length of the thread and show it in the front
and top view.
Q5 A pentagonal pyramid of base side 40 mm and length of axis 70 mm is kept on the ground on its base. A
thread is wound around the pyramid in such a way that it starts from a corner of the base and comes back
to the same corner after completing one revolution. Develop the lateral surface of the pyramid, find the
minimum length of the thread and show the thread in the front and top view.

Q6 A cone of base diameter 60 mm and height 70 mm is resting on its base on HP. It is cut by two section
planes (i) and AIP inclined at 45° to HP and passing through a point 15 mm from the apex and (ii) a
curved plane of radius 30 mm as shown in the figure below

Q7 A funnel is manufactured by a frustum of a cone and a truncated cylinder as shown in the figure below.
Develop the lateral surface of the funnel.

Q8 A square prism resting on one of its square faces on HP has a horizontal hole drilled though it as shown
in the figure below. Develop the lateral surface of the prism.
