A sustainable solution for in-demand raw materials.

PROJECT: International manufacturer Unigel is proposing to build new facilities at the Cornerstone Energy Park (CEP) in
Waggaman, LA to make materials essential to mining precious metals and components critical to electric vehicle batteries,
electronics, appliances, and automotive materials.
 CEP is working to modernize its facilities to use raw materials more efficiently and create more sustainable processes with
less waste.
 Unigel’s state-of-the-art new facility would reuse a Cornerstone byproduct to make the components of materials we use in
our everyday lives, including electronics, construction materials, pulp and paper, packaging, health and safety necessities,
textiles and more.

INVESTMENT: This potential project represents a significant investment in Jefferson Parish and would enable CEP to
optimize its production process generating less waste, increasing sustainability and competitiveness, and generating economic
growth and local manufacturing jobs.
 $40 million in local capital investment in Jefferson Parish
 150+ direct and indirect construction jobs at peak during a 12-month construction period
 30+ new, permanent full-time jobs
 Additional jobs will be generated in equipment fabrication and logistics.

PRODUCT: Unigel’s proposed facility would manufacture sodium cyanide salt (NaCN), a key component in agriculture,
healthcare, mining, electroplating and manufacturing. NaCN is also an essential ingredient in timed release products such as
pharmaceuticals and crop pesticides.
 NACN is a white, granular salt substance that is non-flammable and dissolves in water.
 Unigel processes transform the product from gas to solid, neutralizing it into a briquette form for safe handling and service to
customers by rail and water vessels.
 Solid salt briquettes look like pieces of charcoal but are odorless and non-flammable.
 Salt briquettes would be double packaged in impermeable air and waterproof bags and boxes for delivery to customers.

PROCESS: For almost 70 years, Cornerstone has safely and locally produced the raw materials Unigel needs to create
materials in demand around the globe.
 Cornerstone currently produces acrylonitrile, a key component in the production of carbon and acrylic fibers essential to
making many materials lighter and more efficient such as nylon, sporting equipment, aircraft vehicles and U.S. Military
aircrafts.
 Unigel’s production process would use an existing byproduct of the acrylonitrile production process – hydrogen cyanide
(HCN) – and efficiently reuse it, safely decreasing the need for onsite deep-well storage.
 The Unigel project would not need or bring any new materials onsite.
 The Unigel project would not increase HCN production onsite and instead would convert existing HCN into a stable,
odorless, non-flammable salt.

SAFETY & SUSTAINABILITY: CEP and Unigel are committed to protecting the health and safety of the community, its
employees and the environment. As a prospective tenant at CEP, Unigel’s new facilities would be planned and managed with
the same commitment to safety and sustainability.
 Unigel’s onsite production would also reduce the need for international product shipping, effectively decreasing the
production process’ overall carbon footprint.
 Unigel abides by U.S standards established in the International Cyanide Management Code, a Washington D.C-based
voluntary program governed by the best management practices to protect human and environmental health.

WHO IS UNIGEL? Founded in 1965, Unigel is one of the largest Latin American chemical companies. The company is a
global leader in the production of styrenics, acrylics and nitrogen fertilizers.
 Unigel’s proposed project in Waggaman would be the company’s first U.S. venture and serve primarily North American
customers.
 Unigel values Cornerstone’s commitment to transparent operations, local hiring, local purchasing and community investment,
and plans to further that commitment in all aspects of construction and operations.
