hi, it is said that it is soaked in isopropyl alcohol why does it say in the reactant H20 and 02

explain why?
Isopropyl alcohol is composed of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. When it comes into
contact with the iron in the nails, the oxygen will react with the iron to form iron oxide
(Fe2O3), along with water (H2O) as a byproduct. Therefore, the reactant includes both
oxygen (O2) and water (H2O).
mineSoak the nails on: (let's say that it is for a month)

isopropyl alcohol
ethyl alcohol
1. Observe what happened after a month.

2. Write the most probable reactions (balanced chemical equations) that happened in each case, if
any. (there is a rust forming)

3. From your answers in Q1, determine if a redox reaction occurred. Write the half reaction.
Identify the reducing/oxidizing agents/Identify which substances are reduced/oxidized.

4. Calculate the mass loss/gain of each nail in each case. (supposed the initial weight is 20grams)

a. What do you think is the reason for this gain/loss?

b. Where did the gained mass come from?

c. What happened to the mass lost or where did it go? Apply the Law of Conservation of Mass in
your answer.

5. From your observation, in which condition did the nails rusted first? Last? What do you think
is the reason for this difference in oxidation rate?
1. After a month, the isopropyl alcohol likely caused the nails to rust due to oxidation. The most
probable reaction would be:

Fe + O2 + H2O → Fe2O3 + 2H2

2. A redox reaction occurred in both cases. The half-reaction for the oxidation of iron is:

Fe → Fe2+ + 2e–

The isopropyl alcohol acted as an oxidizing agent and the iron acted as a reducing agent.

3. The mass gain of each nail in the isopropyl alcohol case would be 0.4 grams (20 grams initial
weight + 0.4 grams mass gained). The mass loss of each nail in the ethyl alcohol case would be
0.2 grams (20 grams initial weight - 0.2 grams mass lost).

a. The reason for the mass gain in the isopropyl alcohol case is due to the oxidation of the iron,
forming rust (Fe2O3).

b. The gained mass in the isopropyl alcohol case came from the oxygen and hydrogen in the
isopropyl alcohol combining with the iron to form rust.

c. The mass lost in the ethyl alcohol case is due to the oxidation of the iron, but the oxygen and
hydrogen in the ethyl alcohol did not combine with the iron. The mass lost is due to the oxidation
of the iron, which is in accordance with the Law of Conservation of Mass.

5. The nails in the isopropyl alcohol case rusted first, while the nails in the ethyl alcohol case
rusted last. This difference in oxidation rate is likely due to the fact that isopropyl alcohol is a
stronger oxidizing agent than ethyl alcohol, and thus the oxidation of the iron is faster in the
isopropyl alcohol case.
