LESSON 5: PRINCIPLES OF BUOYANCY AND

STABILITY OF FLOATING BODIES

Archimedes’ Principle on Buoyancy , applicable for prismatic bodies or
bodies with constant cross-sectional areas.
- Any body partially or wholly submerged in a
fluid is subjected to a buoyant force equal to D = draft or depth of submergence
the weight of the fluid displace. CASE 2: Wholly Submerged Body

For bodies that are wholly submerged,

- For wholly submerged body, VD = VB

- cg and BO coincide only when the body is
homogenous
- γ is the unit weight of the fluid.
CASE 1: Partially Submerged

, applicable for all shapes of

bodies
