Definition of Terms
Ethics

Ethics is concerned with rights,

responsibilities, use of language, what it means to live

an ethical life, and how people make moral decisions

(Ethics and Morality | Psychology Today, n.d.).

Flood Management

Flood management is the technique and strategy to reduce

the risk and damage from flooding. In the case of rivers, flooding

occurs when the river bursts its banks and water spills into the

floodplains (Flood Management, n.d.).

Climate Change

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in

temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts

may be natural, such as through variations in the

solar cycle (Nations, n.d.).

Groundwater

Groundwater is the water found

underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand

and rock. It is stored in and moves slowly through

geologic formations of soil, sand and rocks called

aquifers (What Is Groundwater?, n.d.).

3
4

Pollution Control

Pollution control, in environmental

engineering, any of a variety of means employed to

limit damage done to the environment by the

discharge of harmful substances and energies

(Pollution Control | Definition, Examples, Types, & Facts | Britannica, n.d.).

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as

"PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that

cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses (Personal

Protective Equipment - Overview | Occupational Safety and

Health Administration, n.d.)

Infrastructure

Infrastructure is defined as the basic physical

systems of a business, region, or nation and often

involves the production of public goods or production

processes (Infrastructure, n.d.).

Smart Building

A smart building is one that uses

technology to enable efficient and

economical use of resources, while creating

a safe and comfortable environment for

occupants (What Is a Smart Building?, n.d.).

4
5

Global Warming

Global warming is the long-term warming of

the planet’s overall temperature. Though this

warming trend has been going on for a long time, its

pace has significantly increased in the last hundred

years due to the burning of fossil fuels (Global

Warming | National Geographic Society, n.d.)

Waste Management

Waste management is a conduit at the crossroads of inputs

from producers, users and outputs to environmental

compartments, with the overall goal to clear the residues and

reutilize cleared materials and natural resources (Waste

Management - an Overview | ScienceDirect Topics, n.d.).

5
6

Fields of Civil Engineering

Construction Engineering

Construction engineering is an

engineering subset that involves the

design, development and supervision of

a city or region's buildings, roads and

power supplies. It deals with any type of

infrastructure, including roads, railroads, bridges, tunnels, facilities, airports, ports, dams and other

utilities (What Is Construction Engineering?, n.d.).

Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering is a discipline

within civil engineering that focuses on the

behavior of natural geological materials in

engineered systems. Geotechnical engineers

recognize that soil and rock are the cheapest and

most abundant building materials on Earth, and consequently play a major role in the construction

and performance of every type of civil engineering structure (“Geotechnical,” n.d.).

Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering is the branch of

engineering that is concerned with protecting people

from the effects of adverse environmental effects, such

as pollution, as well as improving environmental

quality. Environmental engineers work to improve

6
7

recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control (What Is

Environmental Engineering? | Live Science, n.d.).

Transportation Engineering

Transportation engineering is a branch of

civil engineering that involves the planning,

design, operation, and maintenance of

transportation systems to help build smart, safe,

and livable communities (Wigley, 2021).

Earthquake Engineering

Earthquake engineering draws on the disciplines

of structural engineering, structural dynamics,

seismology, materials engineering, geotechnical

engineering, risk and decision analysis, and probability

and reliability theory to holistically address infrastructure

performance in an uncertain seismic future (Exponent -

Consulting Earthquake Engineers, n.d.).

Coastal Engineering

Coastal engineering is a division of civil

engineering responsible for the organization,

conception, development, and preservation of works

along shorelines. Coastal engineers study the

processes ongoing at the shoreline and construction

7
8

within the coastal zone (Module 8: Coastal Engineering: Hard and Soft Structures | Coastal

Processes, Hazards, and Society, n.d.).

Water Engineering

Water engineering is a subset of civil engineering that focuses on the study of how water

reacts in natural systems, such as coasts, estuaries

and rivers, as well as manmade environments. It

also entails the development and management of

techniques, facilities and equipment that are

designed to preserve and control this natural

resource for human use (A Definitive Guide To

Water Engineering, n.d.).

Structural Engineering

Structural engineering is a branch of civil

engineering that involves the application of the

laws of physics, mathematics and empirical

knowledge to safely design the ‘bones’ and load

bearing elements of manmade structures (What Is

Structural Engineering & What Do Structural

Engineers Do?, 2019).

8
9

Forensic Engineering

Forensic engineering is the

investigation of property loss and injuries

related to failure in materials, components,

design and structures. These can be minor

incidents, such as a crankshaft breaking, or

catastrophic events, such as a bridge collapse (“Forensic Engineering,” n.d.).
