01. Scope
This procedure details the methods to be used by BWQ personnel for
the Penetrant inspection of components in ferritic and non ferritic materials,
in accordance with ASME Section v.

02. Equipment and materials

Penetrant
For the purpose of this procedure Penetrant will be in types:
i. visible dye Penetrant
ii. fluorescent dye Penetrant

Removing of excess Penetrant materials


To remove excess Penetrant from the area under examination
water or solvent is to be used.

Emulsifier:
To be used to make the Penetrant water washable
Developer
Developers consist powder suspended in a volatile spirit.

As Penetrant flaw detection techniques may require the use of toxic,


inflammable and volatile chemicals, safety precautions have to be
considered.

04. Surface conditions


The surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at least
25mm shall be free from dirt, loose scale, paint and debris to the
extent that the inspection will not be impaired. The area under test
must be in as welded , as cast as rolled or as forged condition .

05. Inspection technique

pre-cleaning
All examined surfaces shall be pre-cleaned by suitable mean .

Penetrant application
The Penetrant should be uniformly applied over the entire surface
under examination, the temperature of the surface under
examination shall be within the limits of (16 to 52 co )

Excess Penetrant removal


After the selected penetration time has elapsed the excess penetrant
shall be removed by a suitable mean which is to be specified by the
specific procedures.

Development
Before applying the developer the surface must be completely dry,
a thin uniform coating should be applies using a spray and allowed
to dry.

Viewing conditions
The area under examination shall be illuminated by day light or
artificial light to a level of not less than 500 lux.

06. Reporting
All tests carried out in accordance with this procedure shell be the
subject of a written report which will be made on the appropriate
form

07. Acceptance standard


Acceptance criteria: ASME 8 app 8.

08. Post cleaning


If the presence of residual testing media is found to be objectionable
then the surface under examination shall be cleaned after testing .

09. Retesting

A retest shall be carried out if the background is such that


interpretation of indications is impaired or when the customer
requests retest.
10. Personnel
The personnel who conduct the Penetrant testing according to this
procedure shall be level II certified to SNT-TC-1A ED 2011
certification scheme.
