ABSTRACT
In India people lives in small houses with short income. And thus more prone to
earthquake effects. Thus losses of lives are much more. There are many techniques to resist
earthquake, but they are costly &generally not used by normal people. So, here some useful low-
cost techniques to resist earthquake effects. Here we concentrate upon 1) horizontal bands in
masonry structures. 2) Isolator with STP. &Low strength concrete and rubber layer. 3)
Haunches. 4) Hollow foundation for high rise building. 5) Sliding joint.
Some cost-effective solutions for constructing seismic resistant houses in developing
countries like India. It explores and discuses some of the cost-effective housing construction
models that are in practice in different parts of the world. And then identifies techniques and
methods for making these buildings earthquake resistant. And finally it recommends some
affordable construction methods that are earthquake resistant which might be applicable for
cheaper and safe construction.
India has been facing natural disasters like drought, flood, cyclone, storm surge and
earthquake every year in different parts of the country. These disasters cause large scale
damages, destructions, death, injuries to human and animals. People are often constructed of
non-engineered houses were damaged due to the lack of technical guidance and affordability.
Disasters due to non-engineered housing development, and considering the level of damage to
homes it is necessary to resist the forces of destruction. In the field of earthquake engineering has
been in our country for over 35 years now. Earthquake being a prime calamity of concern,
earthquake proof, buildings, structures and their foundation need to be built to be resistant to
sideways loads. The lighter the building is, lesser are the loads. Seismic protection of critical
infrastructure in the country, many of the Indian earthquake engineers have made significant
contributions. However, as the recent earthquakes during the past earthquakes in India is less
satisfied with the performance of normal structures After that followed the earthquake resistant
design of the special rules that need the most practice is due to the lack of awareness among
engineers.

Housing is the major sector of urban infrastructure. Government of India has launched
the scheme “Housing for All by 2022” for urban areas. To achieve this goal Government is
providing subsidy to the urban poor up to Rs. 1 lakh per house which causes huge burden over
the country’s economy. Despite urban houses are not affordable to the poor due to escalating
land & construction cost. This scenario can be improved if the land or construction cost can be
reduced to some extent without compromising with the quality of structure. Low-cost housing
offers the use of various low cost material & technique which reduces the overall cost of
construction. An attempt is made to review the various researches on low-cost housing material
& techniques which can be used for both rural and urban areas according to their suitability in
different conditions.
Key words
Low-cost housing.
Affordable housing.
Low-cost building material.
Urban housing for the poor.
Inexpensive to build.
Takes less time to build.
Use of resources while not harming the environment.
Not sacrificing the strength, performance and life of building.
Save money while also maintaining building quality.
