Inny możliwy układ czasów to czas PtC w obydwu
częściach zdaniach. Występuje on wtedy, gdy obydwie
czynności danego zdania biegły równolegle obok
13.
siebie , to znaczy żadna z nich nie była na tyle krótka, by
zacząć i skończyć się w trakcie trwania tej drugiej (w zdaniu
14 mycie i patrzenie były na tyle długie, że biegły obok siebie;
14. stąd dwa razy czas PtC).
Porównaj inne układy czasowe:
15. While he was washing the car, she shouted to him.
While he was washing the car, she was shouting at him.
17. (zauważ zmianę przyimka to na at: shout to sb = krzyczeć do
kogoś (żeby nas lepiej usłyszał), shout at sb = krzyczeć na
kogoś (by skarcić go za coś).
18.
Powiedz, co poniższe osoby robiły w czasie, gdy usłyszały alarm, lub co zrobiły w reakcji na dźwięk
alarmu. Jeden przypadek jest dwuznaczny i zaakceptuje oba czasy, nadając zdaniu dwa różne konteksty.
Przykłady: When the fire alarm went off in the shop, the cashier (run out of the shop).
The cashier ran out of the shop.
When the fire alarm went off in the shop, the cashier (talk on the phone).
The cashier was talking on the phone.
1. Some customers (look for different products).
10. The security guard (try to put out the fire himself).
Czasowniki w nawiasach wstaw we właściwym czasie – PtS lub PtC. Symbol 'x2' oznacza, że możliwe
są dwie różne interpretacje, a tym samym dwa różne układy czasowe.
1. When she (arrive), I (ask) her what she wanted from me.
2. When the telephone (ring), I (turn) off the TV. I never talk on the phone while my TV is on.
3. When the alarm (go) off, the students (sit) in the classroom. They (get) up and (go) out immediately.
5. It (rain) while we were there, but it was not a problem. There were some sunny days, too.
25.
30.
7. Last night, I (phone) my aunt and (talk) to her for about ten minutes. She (say) she (come) to visit us soon.
9. As children, we (spend) so much time playing outdoors. And sometimes we (swim) in the river nearby, too.
One day, when we (play) in the river, we (see) a dead fish. It (drift) in the water.
10. As I (read) my morning newspaper, I (come) across an interesting job advertisement. It (say) they (look) for
