1. Briefly explain the current status of generation of electricity in Ethiopia (hydro, wind, solar &
geothermal). Discuss the potential of our country Ethiopia in each source of energy.
2. Briefly explain the basic terms and definition of reservoir with a proper diagram and
explanation
a. Full reservoir level (FRL) e. Dead storage
b. Maximum water level (MWL) f. Surcharge storage
c. Minimum pool level (MPL) g. Bank storage
d. Useful storage
3. Dams are classified based on different criteria. Among these dams can be classified based on
their design. for the following listed dams explain how they are constructed and their
advantages and disadvantages.
 Gravity dam, Earth fill dam, Rock fill dam
 Explain the classification of dams according to constructional material or structural
materials and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

advantages and disadvantages.
 Arch dam, Buttress dam, Timber dam and steel dam
5. Briefly explain classification of dams based on their function, shape and hydraulic and
structural design, discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
6. Explain briefly the factors that should be considered when selecting the site of a dam (at least
10 factors)
7. Explain briefly the various factors which govern the selection of type of a dam (at least 10
factors)

a) Compare and contrast the advantage and disadvantage of each hydroelectric power plants
that are classified based on availability of water (water flow regulation)
b) Briefly Discuss environmental, economic and social analysis of hydropower plant
9. For hydroelectric power plants of Awash II and III, Malka wakena and Fincha discuss
a) History of the plant (when it is established, its generation capacity, its location, the
number of units installed, in which category of hydropower plant they can be classified)
b) The type of development
c) Type of dam constructed
d) Reservoir capacity and catchment area
10. Briefly explain the different types of spillways with neat sketch and give their advantages
and disadvantages. (Common for all groups)

 Your group assignment is done based on your semester project group.

 The document must be prepared both in word (.docx) and pdf format.
 For your document use Times New Roman font type,12 pt. and 1.5 line spacing for
the whole document body, and put each type of reference in standard format.
 Your document and presentation will have a maximum mark of 10-20% which is
evaluated based on different criteria’s.
