The number of protons, neutrons,
and electrons in an atom can be
determined from a set of simple
rules.

 The number of protons in

the nucleus of the atom is
equal to the atomic number
(Z).
 The number of electrons in
a neutral atom is equal to
the number of protons.
 The mass number of the
atom (M) is equal to the
sum of the number of
protons and neutrons in the
nucleus.
 The number of neutrons is
equal to the difference
between the mass number of
the atom (M) and the atomic
number (Z).

Examples: Let's determine the

number of protons, neutrons, and
electrons in the following isotopes.
12
C   13C   14C   14N
The different isotopes of an
element are identified by writing
the mass number of the atom in the
upper left corner of the symbol for
the element. 12C, 13C, and 14C are
isotopes of carbon (Z = 6) and
therefore contain six protons. If the
atoms are neutral, they also must
contain six electrons. The only
difference between these isotopes is
the number of neutrons in the
nucleus.
12
C: 6 electrons, 6 protons, and 6
neutrons
13
C: 6 electrons, 6 protons, and 7
neutrons
14
C: 6 electrons, 6 protons, and 8
neutrons

In an element X, the atomic

number Z is placed at lower left
and the mass number A at the upper
right. This may be shown in symbol
;

ZXA

How to solve for the number of

protons, number of electrons and
number of neutrons in a particular
atom?

Example 1.
How many protons(p+),
electrons (e-), and neutrons (n0) in
(Sodium) 11Na23 atom.

Given:
Element: Sodium (Na)
Atomic Number o f Na=11
Mass Number of Na =23
Answer: Proton( p+ ) = 11;
electron (e-) = 11; neutron( n0) =
23-11 equals 12

The symbol 11Na23 designates an

atom of sodium that has a mass
number of 23 and an atomic
number of 11.The number of
protons in an atom of sodium is
11(atomic number z), the number
of electrons is also equal to 11
( number of electron is equal to the
number of protons for a neutral
atom). The number of neutrons in
the nucleus is equal to 12, (A –Z).
(23 minus 11)
Example 2.
In an atom of Copper 29Cu64,
A = 64 (Mass number) and
Z=29 (atomic number)
Atomic number = 29
Mass number = 64
Therefore:
Number of p+ = 29
e- = 29
n0 = 64-29
