Introduction

Heat pumps, air conditioners and liquid chilling packages can be selected and compared at standard
rating conditions. These conditions do not represent the usual operating conditions of the equipment
over a season. Better comparison for equipment can be assessed by determining Seasonal Energy
Efficiency Ratio and Seasonal Coefficient of Performance that enable to take into account more
representative operating conditions and performance at rated capacities.
Fixed capacity heat pumps, air conditioners and liquid chilling packages deal with varying loads by
varying the operation time. The efficiency of the system is dependent on the effectiveness of the
controlling thermostats. Variable capacity air conditioners, liquid chilling packages and heat pumps, by
continuous or step control of the compressor, can more closely match the varying load improving
system efficiency.
This document provides part load conditions and calculation methods for calculating the Seasonal
Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEERon) and Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOPon and SCOPnet) of such
units when they are used to fulfil the cooling and heating demands.
Other electric energy consumptions can occur when the unit is not used to fulfil the cooling and heating
demands such as those from a crankcase heater or when the unit is on standby. These consumptions are

4 Part load conditions for space cooling

4.1 General

For the purpose of calculation of SEER/SEERon as explained in Clause 5, the part load ratios mentioned
below shall be based on the part load ratio formulas and not on the rounded figures of Tables 2 to 5.
For the purpose of SEER and SEERon the different conditions are defined by a reference design
temperature Tdesignc equal to 35 °C.
4.2 Air-to-air units

For outdoor air-to-recycled air units, the part load conditions for determining the declared capacity
(Pdh) and the declared energy efficiency ratio (EERd) are given in Table 2.

4.4 Air-to-water(brine) units

For each application, units either allowing or not allowing a variation of the outlet water(brine)
temperature with the outdoor temperature are considered. The part load conditions for determining
the declared capacity (Pdc) and the declared energy efficiency ratio (EERd) are given in Table 4.

5 Calculation methods for seasonal space cooling efficiency ηs,c, SEER and SEERon
5.1 General

For units, except multi-split air-to-air units > 12 kW cooling capacity at standard rating conditions and
multi-split water (brine)-to-air, the calculation method as described below shall be used.
Where related to multi-split air-to-air units > 12 kW and multi-split water(brine)-to-air the calculations
shall be based on the rating of the outdoor unit as described in Annex N.

5.2 Calculation of the seasonal space cooling efficiency ηs,c

The seasonal space cooling efficiency ηs,c expressed in %, is defined as given in Formula (1)
1
η s ,c =
CC
× SEER - ∑ F (i ) (1)

where
CC is the conversion coefficient, equal to 2,5
SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (see 5.3)
ΣF(i) is the correction calculated according to Formula (2):
Σ F=
i ()
F 1 +F 2 () () (2)

where
F(1) is the correction that accounts for a negative contribution to the seasonal
energy efficiency ratio due to adjusted contributions of temperature controls,
equal to 3 %;
F(2) is the correction that accounts for the negative contribution to the seasonal
energy efficiency ratio by energy consumption of ground water (brine)
pumps. This factor is only for water(brine)-to-water(brine) and water(brine)-
to-air units and is equal to 5 %.

5.3 General formula for calculation of SEER

The SEER is defined as reference annual cooling demand QC divided by the annual energy consumption
for cooling QCE according to Formula (3):
QC
SEER = (3)
QCE

where
QC is the reference annual cooling demand expressed in kWh;
QCE is the annual energy consumption for cooling expressed in kWh.

The climate conditions and all hours to be used for SEER calculations for air-to-air units ≤ 12 kW are
given in Annex A.
The climate conditions and all hours to be used for SEER calculations for air-to-air units > 12 kW,
water(brine)-to-air units and comfort chillers are given in Annex D.
5.4 Calculation of the reference annual cooling demand QC

The reference annual cooling demand QC is expressed in kWh and is calculated according to
Formula (4):
QC = Pdesingc × HCE (4)

31
BAS EN 14825:2020

EN 14825:2018 (E)
ISBIH račun br: 04/21-114 - 2021-03-04 - Lafat komerc d.o.o.

where
Pdesignc is the design cooling load of the building the unit is suitable for as declared by the
manufacturer, expressed in kW;
HCE is the number of equivalent active mode hours for cooling, expressed in hours. For air-to-
air units < 12 kW, the number is given in Annex A. For air-to-air units > 12 kW and for
water(brine)-to-air units, the numbers are given in Annex D (“On mode hours”).
5.5 Calculation of the reference annual energy consumption for cooling QCE

The annual energy consumption for cooling QCE, expressed in kW, includes the energy consumption
during active mode, thermostat-off mode, standby mode, off mode and that of the crankcase heater and
is calculated according to Formula (5).
The energy consumption during active mode is derived from the calculation of SEERon. For
determination of SEERon, see 5.6.
QC
Q=
CE + H TO × PTO + H SB × PSB + H CK × PCK + H OFF × POFF (5)
SEER on

where
QC is the reference annual cooling demand, expressed in kWh;
SEERon is the active mode seasonal energy efficiency ratio
HTO, HSB, HCK, HOFF are the numbers of hours the unit is considered to work in thermostat-off mode,
standby mode, crankcase heater mode and off mode respectively, expressed in h;
PTO, PSB, PCK, POFF are the power inputs during thermostat-off mode, standby mode, crankcase heater
mode and off mode respectively, expressed in kW.
5.6 Calculation of SEERon

The SEERon is determined according to Formula (6).

n

∑h j × Pc (T j )
j =1
SEERon = (6)
n  Pc (T j ) 
∑ h 
j
EER (T )

j =1  bin j 

where
Tj is the bin temperature;
j is the bin number;
n is the total number of bins;
Pc(Tj) is the cooling load for the corresponding temperature Tj, in kW;
hj is the number of bin hours occurring at the corresponding temperature Tj;
EERbin(Tj) is the EER value of the unit for the corresponding temperature Tj.
The cooling load Pc(Tj) is determined by multiplying the design load value (Pdesignc) with the part load
ratio for each corresponding bin. This part load ratio is calculated according to Formula (7):
pl(Tj) = (Tj-16) / (35-16) (7)

32
BAS EN 14825:2020

EN 14825:2018 (E)
ISBIH račun br: 04/21-114 - 2021-03-04 - Lafat komerc d.o.o.

The EER values and capacity values at each bin are determined via interpolation of the EERbin and
capacity values at part load conditions A, B, C and D. Interpolation of EERbin and capacities are done
between with the two closest part load conditions (as mentioned in the tables of Clause 4).
For part load conditions above part load condition A, the same EER values as for condition A are used.
For part load conditions below part load condition D, the same EER values as for condition D are used.
5.7 Calculation procedure for determination of EERbin values at part load conditions A, B,
C, D
5.7.1 General

In part load condition A (design load), the declared capacity of a unit is considered to be equal to the
cooling load (Pdesignc). The EERbin is then the EER corresponding to Pdesignc. In part load conditions B, C
and D, there can be two possibilities:
— if the declared capacity of a unit is matching with the required cooling load, the corresponding EERd
shall be considered as EERbin. This may occur with staged or variable capacity units (see 5.7.3);

— if the declared capacity of a unit is higher than the required cooling load, the unit has to cycle
on/off. This may occur with fixed capacity or staged or variable capacity units. In such cases, a
degradation coefficient (Cd) has to be used to calculate the corresponding EERbin value. Such
calculation is explained below.

In that case, the capacity ratio (CR) is required. CR is the ratio of the cooling load (Pc) over the declared
capacity (Pdc) of the unit at the same temperature conditions (see Formula (8)).
Pdesignc
CR = pl(T j ) × (8)
Pdc

where
pl(Tj) is the Part Load Ratio as given in (7)
Pdesignc is the cooling design load, expressed in kW
Pdc is the declared capacity of the unit at the same temperature conditions as for part
load conditions B, C and D, expressed in kW
NOTE If the value of CR is higher than 1 then CR is equal to 1.

5.7.2 Calculation procedure for fixed capacity units

5.7.2.1 Air-to-air and water(brine)-to-air units

For each part load condition B, C and D, the EERbin is calculated according to Formula (9):
EERbin = EERd × (1 – Cd × (1 - CR)) (9)

33
BAS EN 14825:2020

EN 14825:2018 (E)
ISBIH račun br: 04/21-114 - 2021-03-04 - Lafat komerc d.o.o.

where
EERd is the EER corresponding to the declared capacity (Pdc) of the unit at the
same temperature conditions as for part load conditions B, C and D;
Cd is the degradation coefficient for cooling mode;
CR is the capacity ratio.
For determination of the Cd value, see 11.5.2. If Cd is not determined by test then the default
degradation coefficient Cd shall be 0,25.
5.7.2.2 Air-to-water(brine), water(brine)-to-water(brine)

For each part load conditions B, C and D, the EERbin is calculated according to Formula (10):
CR
EERbin = EERd × (10)
Cd × CR + (1 − Cd )

where
EERd is the EER corresponding to the declared capacity (Pdc) of the unit at the
same temperature conditions as for part load conditions B, C and D;
Cd is the degradation coefficient for cooling mode;
CR is the capacity ratio.
For determination of the Cd value, see 11.5.3. If Cd is not determined by test then the default
degradation coefficient Cd shall be 0,9.
5.7.3 Calculation procedure for staged and variable capacity units

Determine the declared capacity and EERd at the closest step or increment of the capacity control of the
unit to reach the required cooling load. If this step allows to reach the required cooling load
within ± 10 % (e.g. between 9,9 kW and 8,1 kW for a required cooling load of 9 kW), the target capacity
is considered as achieved and the measured EER shall be used as EERbin. If this step does not allow to
reach the required cooling part load within ± 10 %, determine the capacity and the effective power
input at the defined part load temperatures for the step on the other side of the required cooling load.
The part load power input at the required cooling part load is then determined by linear interpolation
between the results obtained from these two steps. The EERbin is then determined by the required
cooling part load divided by the interpolated part load power input.
For air-to-air and water(brine)-to-air units, if the smallest control step of the unit exceeds the required
cooling load by more than 10 % the EERd at the required part load ratio is calculated using Formula (9)
as for fixed capacity units.
For air-to-water(brine), water(brine)-to-water(brine) and DX-to-water(brine) units, if the smallest
control step of the unit exceeds the required cooling load by more than 10 % the EERd at the required
part load ratio is calculated using Formula (10) as for fixed capacity units.

6 Part load conditions for space heating

6.1 General

For the purpose of calculation of SCOP/SCOPon/SCOPnet as explained in Clause 8, the part load ratios
mentioned below shall be based on the part load ratio formulas and not on the rounded values given for
each climate in the following tables.

34
BAS EN 14825:2020

EN 14825:2018 (E)
ISBIH račun br: 04/21-114 - 2021-03-04 - Lafat komerc d.o.o.

For the purpose of SCOP and SCOPon/SCOPnet, there are three reference design conditions: average (A),
warmer (W) and colder (C).
The relevant Tdesignh values are defined as follows:
— Average climate: dry bulb temperature conditions at −10 °C outdoor temperature and 20 °C indoor
temperature;

— Colder climate: dry bulb temperature conditions at −22 °C outdoor temperature and 20 °C indoor
temperature;

— Warmer climate: dry bulb temperature conditions at +2 °C outdoor temperature and 20 °C indoor
temperature,

For outdoor air dry bulb temperatures higher or equal to −10 °C the wet bulb temperature equals the
dry bulb temperature minus 1 K. For dry bulb temperatures below −10 °C, the wet bulb temperature is
not defined.
For heat pumps, the relevant Tbiv is defined as follows:
— for the average heating season, the dry bulb bivalent temperature is +2 °C or lower;

— for the colder heating season, the dry bulb bivalent temperature is −7 °C or lower;

— for the warmer heating season, the dry bulb bivalent temperature is +7 °C or lower;

For heat pumps, the relevant TOL is defined as follows:

— for the average heating season, the dry bulb temperature is −7 °C or lower;

— for the colder heating season, the dry bulb temperature is −15 °C or lower;

— for the warmer heating season, the dry bulb temperature is +2 °C or lower;

If the declared TOL is lower than the Tdesignh of the considered climate, then the outdoor dry bulb
temperature is equal to Tdesignh for the part load condition E in Table 6, Tables 8 to 11.
In case of colder climate and if TOL is below −20 °C, an additional part load condition G at −15 °C shall
apply for air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps.
For hybrid heat pumps:
• Tbiv is not applicable but replaced by Tfb,off, the temperature above which the fossil boiler is switched
off. The limitation for Tbiv does not apply to Tfb,off.

• TOL is not applicable but replaced by Thp,off, the temperature below which the heat pump is
switched off. If the declared Thp,off is lower than Tdesignh of the considered climate then Thp,off shall be
considered equal to Tdesignh.

6.2 Air-to-air units

For outdoor air-to-recycled air units, the part load conditions for determining the declared capacity Pdh
and the declared coefficient of performance COPd are given in Table 6:

6.4 Air-to-water(brine) units
6.4.1 General

The part load conditions for determining the declared capacity (Pdh) and the declared coefficient of
performance (COPd) are given in Table 8, Table 9, Table 10 and Table 11.
The variable outlet temperature (Toutlet,average) shall only be applied when the control provides an
outdoor air temperature dependant modification of the outlet temperature.
For units with variable outlet that have to cycle on/off to reach the required part load ratio the inlet and
outlet temperatures of the indoor heat exchanger shall be determined according to Formula (35) in
11.5.1.
For hybrid heat pumps Tbiv and TOL mentioned in Table 8, Table 9, Table 10 and Table 11 of part load
conditions shall be replaced by Tfb,off and Thp,off respectively as explained in 6.1. For hybrid heat pumps
using the combined test method (see 8.6.2.2) in case Thp,off is greater than Tdesignh an additional part load
condition at Tdesignh is required.

7 Test methods for hybrid heat pumps

7.1 General

Two test methods are proposed to determine the SCOPon for the hybrid heat pumps:
— fossil fuel boiler and heat pump are tested separately,

— fossil fuel boiler and heat pump are run together in a combined test.

For both methods the test procedure described in Clause 8 applies.

7.2 Separated test method

The hybrid heat pump shall be installed according to EN 14511-3 and to the technical documentation.
In addition:
— it shall be connected to electrical supply;

— the boiler is hydraulically connected, but with no fuel supply.

The tests are conducted with the heat pump only in operation and according to Clause 6 part load
conditions. Only testing temperature conditions equal or greater than Thp,off shall be conducted. Below
Thp,off, heat pump declared capacity is set equal to zero.
For the determination of the seasonal space heating energy efficiency of the boiler ηson and ηssup and the
corresponding parameters (η1, η4, P1, P4, Pstby, elmax, elmin, PSB, Pign) the gas boiler shall be tested

If the total volume of gas Vg during the duration of the test is measured, the average gas volume flow is
calculated according to Formula (12).
V = 3600 × Vg/te (12)

where
Vg is the volume of the gas, expressed in m3;

NOTE The heat input at the reference conditions (P, T and Gas) is not a requirement for this standard.

7.3.3 Calculation of liquid fuel input

The consumed fuel quantity is measured by a balance during the test.

Qfuel expressed in kW is calculated using the following Formula (13)

Q fuel =
(m1 − m2 ) × GCV (13)
te

where
m1 is the mass of fuel before the test, expressed in kg;
m2 is the mass of fuel at the end of the test, expressed in kg;
te is the duration of the test, expressed in s;
GCV is the gross calorific value of the reference fuel oil, expressed in kJ/kg.
7.3.4 Calculation of annual fossil fuel consumption

The annual fossil fuel consumption in kWh for the dedicated climate and heating system can be
calculated as the sum of Qfossil times hj over all bins, with Qfossil equal to Qg of Formula (11) for gas boiler
and equal to Qfuel of Formula (13) for liquid fuel boiler.

energy efficiency by energy consumption of brine and water pumps. This factor is only for
water(brine)-to-water(brine) and water(brine)-to-air units and is equal to 5 %.

COPbin(Tj) is the COP value of the unit for the corresponding temperature Tj;
elbu(Tj) is the required capacity of an electric supplementary heater for the corresponding
temperature Tj, expressed in kW;
sup(Tj) is the required capacity of the fossil fuel supplementary heater for the corresponding
temperature Tj expressed in kW;
ƞssup is the seasonal space heating energy efficiency of the fossil fuel supplementary heater;

CC Is the conversion coefficient, equal to 2,5.

For air-to-air units ≤ 12 kW the values to be used for j, Tj and hj are given in Annex A.

values to be used for j, Tj and hj are given in Annex B.
For air-to-air units > 12 kW and water(brine)-to-air units the values to be used for j, Tj and hj are given
in Annex D.
The heating load Ph(Tj) is determined by multiplying the design load value (Pdesignh) with the part load
ratio for each corresponding bin. This part load ratio pl(Tj) is calculated according to Formula (23):

50
BAS EN 14825:2020

pl(Tj) = (Tj −16) / (Tdesignh-16) (23)

where
j is the bin number,
Tj is the bin temperature,
Tdesignh is the reference design temperature for heating.
The COPbin values and capacity values at each bin are determined via interpolation of the COPbin and
capacity values at part load conditions A, B, C, D, E, F and G where applicable. Interpolation of COPbin and
capacities are done between with the two closest part load conditions (as mentioned in the tables of
Clause 6).
The COPbin values and capacity values for part load conditions above D are extrapolated from the COPbin
values and capacity values at part load conditions C and D.
In case of the colder climate, and if TOL is below −20 °C, an additional calculation point has to be taken
from the capacity and COPbin at −15 °C outdoor temperature (condition G) for air-to-air and air-to-
water(brine) units.
If the capacity of the unit is lower than the value of Ph(Tj), correction needs to be made for the missing
capacity either with an electric supplementary heater with a COP of 1 or with the supplied fossil fuel
supplementary heater having an efficiency ƞssup.
Below TOL (operation limit) the unit is not running. The capacity of the unit at outside air temperatures
below TOL is 0 kW and correction needs to be made for the missing capacity either with an electric
supplementary heater with a COP of 1 or with the supplied fossil fuel supplementary heater having an
efficiency ƞssup.

capacities are done between with the 2 closest part load conditions (as mentioned in the tables of
Clause 6).
The COPbin values and capacity values for part load conditions above D are extrapolated from the COPbin
values and capacity values at part load conditions C and D.
Below Thp,off the heat pump is not running. The capacity of the heat pump at outside air temperatures
below Thp,off is 0 kW.
If the capacity of the heat pump under any testing conditions above Thp,off is lower than the value of
Ph(Tj), the missing capacity will be delivered by the integrated fossil boiler.
8.6.2.2 Combined test method

When using the combined test method, the unit is considered as a black box for which the heating
capacity, electricity and/or fossil fuel consumptions are measured.
For each test at the temperature condition Tj, the COPd of the unit is defined as the ratio between the
heating capacity of the unit and the total energy power input as given in formula (25):

8.7 Calculation procedure for determination of COPbin values at part load conditions A to
G
8.7.1 General

In part load conditions A to G, where applicable, there are two possibilities:

— if the declared capacity of a unit is matching with or lower than the required heating load, the
corresponding COPd value of the unit is to be used;

— if the declared capacity of a unit is higher than the required heating load, the unit has to cycle
on/off. This may occur with fixed capacity or staged or variable units. In such cases, a degradation
factor (Cd) has to be used to calculate the corresponding COPbin value. Such calculation is explained
below.

CR is the ratio of the heating load over the declared capacity (Pdh) of the unit at the same temperature
conditions, calculated according to Formula (27).
Pdesignh
CR = pl(T j )× (27)
Pdh

where
Pdesignh is the design heating load of the building the unit is suitable for as declared by the
manufacturer, expressed in kW;
pl(Tj) is the part load ratio as given in 8.6.1 Formula (23);
Pdh is the declared capacity of the unit at the same temperature conditions as for part load
conditions A to G where applicable.
NOTE If the value of CR is greater than 1 then CR is equal to 1.

8.7.2 Calculation procedure for fixed capacity units

8.7.2.1 Air-to-air and water(brine)-to-air units

For the part load conditions A to G, where applicable, where the capacity ratio is lower than 1, the
COPbin is calculated according to Formula (28):
COPbin = COPd × (1 - Cd × (1 – CR)) (28)

where
COPd is the COP corresponding to the declared capacity (Pdh) of the unit at the same temperature
conditions as for part load conditions A to G, where applicable;
Cd is the degradation coefficient;
CR is the capacity ratio.
For determination of the Cd value, see 11.5.2. If Cd is not determined by test then the default
degradation coefficient Cd shall be 0,25.
NOTE The value of CR cannot be higher than 1.

54
BAS EN 14825:2020

EN 14825:2018 (E)
ISBIH račun br: 04/21-114 - 2021-03-04 - Lafat komerc d.o.o.

8.7.2.2 Air-to-water(brine), water(brine)-to-water(brine) and DX-to-water(brine) units

In part load conditions A to G, where applicable, the COPbin is calculated according to Formula (29):
CR
COPbin = COPd × (29)
Cd × CR + (1 − Cd )

where
COPd is the COP corresponding to the declared capacity (Pdh) of the unit at the
same temperature conditions as for part load conditions A to G, where
applicable;
Cd is the degradation coefficient;
CR is the capacity ratio.

For determination of the Cd value, see 11.5.3. If Cd is not determined by test then the default
degradation coefficient Cd shall be 0,9.
8.7.3 Calculation procedure for staged and variable capacity units

Determine the declared capacity and COPd at the closest step or increment of the capacity control of the
unit to reach the required heating load.
If this step allows to reach the required heating load within ± 10 % (e.g. between 9,9 kW and 8,1 kW for
a required heating load of 9 kW), it is assumed that:
— For temperatures above or equal to Tbiv, the target capacity is achieved and the measured COP can
be used as COPbin.

— For temperatures below Tbiv, the target capacity is not achieved. The measured capacity and
corresponding COP shall be considered as declared capacity and COPd.

If this step does not allow to reach the required heating part load within ± 10 %, determine the capacity
and the effective power input at the defined part load temperatures for the steps on the other side of
the required heating load. The part load power input at the required heating part load is then
determined by linear interpolation between the results obtained from these two steps. The COPd is then
determined by the required heating part load divided by the part load power input.
For air-to-air and water(brine)-to-air units, if the smallest control step of the unit is more than 10 %
higher than the required heating load, the COPd at the required part load ratio is calculated using
Formula (28) as for fixed capacity units.
For air-to-water(brine), water(brine)-to-water(brine) and DX-to-water(brine) units, if the smallest
control step of the unit is more than 10 % higher than the required heating load, the COPd at the
required part load ratio is calculated using Formula (29) as for fixed capacity units.

9 Part load conditions for process cooling

The different conditions are defined by a reference ambient temperature equal to 35 °C for air-cooled
process chillers and a water(brine) inlet temperature of 30°C for water(brine)-cooled process chillers.
The part load conditions for determining the declared capacity (Pdc) and the declared energy efficiency
ratio (EERd) are given in Table 16 for air-cooled process chillers and in Table 17 for water(brine)-
cooled process chillers, at low temperature, medium temperature and high temperature applications.

10 Calculation method for SEPR

10.1 General formula for calculation of SEPR

The SEPR is defined as reference annual process cooling demand divided by the annual electricity
consumption Q, calculated according to Formula (30).
n

n
(h j × PC (T j ))
∑(h j × PC (T j ))
SEPR = ∑ Q
= n
j =1

PC (T j )
(30)
j =1

j =1

where
Tj is the bin temperature;
j is the bin number;
n is the total number of bins;
PC(Tj) is the process cooling load for the corresponding temperature Tj;
hj is the number of bin hours occurring at the corresponding temperature Tj;
EERbin(Tj) is the EER value of the unit for the corresponding temperature Tj.
The values to be used for j, Tj and hj are given in Annex C. The process cooling load PC(Tj) is determined
by multiplying the full load value (Pdesignr) with the part load ratio for each corresponding bin.
This part load ratio PR(Tj) is calculated according to Formula (31) or Formula (32).
— For air-to-water(brine) units:

PR(Tj) = 0,8 + 0,2 (Tj-5) / (35-5) (31)

— For water(brine)-to-water(brine) units:

PR(Tj) = 0,8 + 0,2 (Tj-9) / (30-9) (32)

where
Tj is the outdoor bin temperature for air-cooled process chillers or the water(brine) inlet
temperature for water(brine)-cooled process chillers;
j is the bin number.
The EER values at each bin are determined via interpolation of the EER values at part load conditions A,
B, C and D as mentioned in the tables of Clause 9.
For part load conditions above part load condition A, the same part load ratio and EER values as for
condition A are used.
For part load conditions below part load condition D, the same part load ratio and EER values as for
condition D are used.

10.2 Calculation procedure for determination of EERbin values at part load conditions A,
B, C, D
10.2.1 General

In part load condition A (full load), the declared capacity of a unit is considered equal to the process
cooling load (Pdesignr).
In part load conditions B, C and D, there can be two possibilities:
— if the declared capacity of a unit is matching with the required process cooling load, the
corresponding EERd value of the unit is to be used. This may occur with staged or variable capacity
units (see 10.2.3);

— if the declared capacity of a unit is higher than the process cooling load, the unit has to cycle on/off.
This may occur with fixed capacity or staged or variable capacity units. In such cases, a degradation
coefficient (Cd) has to be used to calculate the EERbin from the declared EERd. Such calculation is
explained below.

In that case, the capacity ratio (CR) is required. CR is the ratio of the cooling load (Pc) over the declared
capacity (Pdc) of the unit at the same temperature conditions, calculated according to Formula (33).
Pdesignc
CR = PR (T j )× (33)
Pdc

where
PR (Tj) is the Part Load Ratio as given in Formula (31) for air-cooled units and in Formula (32) for
water(brine)-cooled units,
Pdesignr is the full load value, in kW,
Pdc is the declared capacity of the unit at the same temperature conditions as for part load
conditions B, C and D, in kW.

NOTE If the value of CR is greater than 1 then CR is equal to 1.

10.2.2 Calculation procedure for fixed capacity process chillers

For each part load condition B, C and D, the EERbin is calculated according to Formula (34):
CR
EER
= bin EERd ×
Cd × CR + (1 − Cd ) (34)

where
EERd is the EER corresponding to the declared capacity (Pdc) of the unit at the same temperature
conditions as for part load conditions B, C and D;
Cd is the degradation coefficient;
CR is the capacity ratio.

If Cd is not determined by test then the default degradation coefficient Cd shall be 0,9.

10.2.3 Calculation procedure for variable capacity process chillers

Determine the declared capacity and EERd at the closest step or increment of the capacity control of the
chiller to reach the required cooling load. If this step allows to reach the required cooling load
within ± 3 % (e.g. between 103 kW and 97 kW for a required cooling load of 100 kW), the target
capacity is considered as achieved and the measured EER shall be used and the measured EER can be
used as EERbin. If this step does not allow to reach the required cooling part load within ± 3 %,
determine the capacity and the effective power input at the defined part load temperatures for the step
on the other side of the required cooling load. The part load power input at the required cooling part
load is then determined by linear interpolation between the results obtained from these two steps. The
EERbin is then determined by the required cooling part load divided by the interpolated part load power
input.
If the smallest control step of the chiller is higher than the required cooling load, the EERd at the
required part load ratio is calculated using Formula (34) as for fixed capacity process chillers.

11 Test methods for testing capacities, EERbin and COPbin values during active
mode at part load conditions
11.1 General

For the purposes of this European Standard, testing for capacities, EERbin and COPbin shall be done
without including any integral supplementary heating.
For testing at part load conditions, the test apparatus and the requirements given in EN 14511-3 shall
apply, except when modified by the following clauses.
For testing air-to-air air conditioners and heat pumps having a capacity ≤ 12 kW at standard rating
conditions the calorimeter room method shall be used.
For multi-split air-to-air units > 12 kW cooling capacity (or heating capacity for heating only units) at
standard rating conditions and multi-split water(brine)-to-air units, the performance under part load
conditions is always obtained based on the rating of the outdoor unit, as described in Annex N.
For DX-to-water(brine) units the test method as described in EN 15879-1 shall apply.
For multisplit units below or equal to 12 kW, data shall be provided for 1 to 1 system capacity ratio as
defined in EN 14511-1.
11.2 Refrigerant piping

For single split air-to-air units above 12 kW, according to EN 14511-3, the length of the lines shall be
5 m and if the constraints of the test installation make 5 m not possible, the piping can be extended up
to 7,5 m. If 7,5 m can’t be achieved, a piping length of 11 m ± 0,5 m shall be used with a cooling
correction factor of 1,02 and a heating correction factor of 1,01. The maximum height difference is kept
to 2,5 m according to EN 14511-3.
For multisplit air-to-air units above 12 kW, the maximum height difference can be extended to 3,5 m if
the installation constrains make not possible to keep it below 2,5 m.
According to EN 14511-3, the length of the lines shall be 5 m and if the constraints of the test
installation make 5 m not possible, the piping can be extended up to 7,5 m. If 7,5 m can’t be achieved,
the total actual piping length from the outdoor unit to each indoor unit shall be as in table below. To
calibrate the performance at 7,5 m, the measured capacity is multiplied by a correction factor for
cooling and for heating mode.
The manufacturer shall provide a schematic of the tested combination installation, including
indoor/outdoor units and all piping accessories. Piping layout shall be prepared in order to minimize

11.3 Basic principles

The tests shall be carried out with the electrical power supply as defined in EN 14511-2 and under the
environmental conditions given in EN 14511-2. All the tests shall be conducted according to
EN 14511-3 procedure.
For non-ducted units, selected settings of fan speed and adjustable louvres shall be the ones used for
the standard rating capacity test.
For ducted units, the airflow and External Static Pressure (ESP) as specified for the standard capacity
test shall be set when the refrigerating system does not operate, as stated in EN 14511-3. The ESP is
achieved by setting a damper after the section used for its measurement and by adjusting it in order to
get 0 Pa static pressure after the damper. For each part load test, the setting of the damper shall remain
unchanged but the 0 Pa static pressure after the damper shall be maintained to consider the possible
variation of the airflow with the part load conditions.
If other instructions are not supplied, when performing measurements in heating mode, set the highest
room temperature on the unit/system control device; when performing measurements in cooling mode,
set the lowest room temperature on the unit/system control device.

In order to determine the effective power input, the available external or internal static pressure
difference shall also be measured.
If the liquid pump or the fan is an integral part of the unit and in operation, the total measured power
input shall be corrected from the fraction of the power input of the liquid pump or fan. The correction
shall be made using the formulas given in EN 14511-3 with the flow rate and the available external
static pressure difference measured during the test at part load conditions.
If the liquid pump or fan is not an integral part of the unit, the total measured power input shall be
corrected from the fraction of the liquid pump or fan power input that is necessary to overcome the
internal static pressure difference. The correction shall be made using the formulas given in
EN 14511-3 with the flow rate and the internal static pressure difference measured during the test at
part load conditions.
In case of on/off cycling of the compressor, to determine if the liquid pump or fan is operating, the
control signal shall be measured. If no control signal is available, it shall be assumed that the liquid
pump or fan is operating.
Measured capacities shall also be corrected from indoor fan or liquid pump power input according to
EN 14511-3.

11.4 Uncertainties of measurement

The heating and cooling capacities measured on the liquid side shall be determined within a maximum
uncertainty of (2+3/part load ratio) %.
The steady-state heating and cooling capacities measured using the calorimeter method shall be
determined with a maximum uncertainty of:
— 5 % when the capacity measured is greater than 2,0 kW;

— 10 % when the capacity measured is between 1,0 kW and 2,0 kW;

— 15 % if it is lower than 1,0 kW.

The heating capacities measured during transient operation (defrost cycles) using the calorimeter
method shall be determined with a maximum uncertainty of 10 %.
The heating and cooling capacities measured on the air side using the air enthalpy method shall be
determined with a maximum uncertainty of (4 + 6/part load ratio) %.
All uncertainties of measurement are independent of the individual uncertainties of measurement
including the uncertainties on the properties of fluids.
The maximum uncertainty of the measurement of the power input compressor off state shall be
— 0,3 W for power inputs lower than or equal to 10 W;

— 3 % for power inputs greater than 10 W.

NOTE CEN ISO/TS 16491 provides guidelines for the calculation of the uncertainties of measurement of the
capacity on the air side when using the calorimeter room or the air enthalpy methods.

11.5 Test procedures for units with fixed capacity

11.5.1 General

Due to difficulties that will occur during on/off cycling, perform a capacity test at A to G temperature
conditions according to EN 14511-3 where applicable. Calculate the Cd degradation coefficient or apply
the default value. Apply Formulae (9), (10), (28), (29) or (34) to calculate the corresponding EERbin or
COPbin.
For air-to-water(brine), water(brine)-water(brine) and DX-to-water(brine) with a variable outlet
temperature, the inlet and/or outlet water temperatures for testing shall be recalculated in order to
obtain an average outlet temperature (Toulet,average) equal to the variable outlet temperature as specified
in the table of part load conditions, as applicable.
The inlet and outlet water temperatures, Tinlet,capacitytest and Toutlet,capacitytest respectively are determined
using Formula (35) in an iterative process until a convergence of less than or equal to the value of
permissible deviation of the mean value toutlet,capacitytest defined in the EN 14511-3 is reached.
Toutlet,average = Tinlet,capacitytest + (Toutlet,capacitytest - Tinlet,capacitytest) × CR (35)

BAS EN 14825:2020

where
Tinlet,capacitytest is the inlet water temperature at the indoor heat exchanger measured during
testing;
Toutlet,capacitytest is the outlet water temperature at the indoor heat exchanger measured during
testing;
CR is the capacity ratio.
The iterative process is as follows:
— Test with Toutlet,capacitytest equal to the variable outlet temperatures as specified in the table of part
load conditions and determined the capacity of the unit

— Calculate the resulting CR

— Use Formula (35) for calculating the corrected Toutlet,capacitytest at which the test shall be performed in
order to obtain Toutlet,average

— Retest with the corrected Toutlet,capacitytest and the same water flow rate for units fixed water flow rate
or the same fixed temperature difference for units with variable water flow rate.

— Repeat previous steps until the required convergence is reached.

An example of calculation is given in Annex F.

For units with variable water flow rate, if at any iteration the fixed temperature difference leads to a
water flow rate lower than the minimum flow specified by the manufacturer, then this minimum flow
rate shall be set.
For fixed flow units Tinlet,capacitytest and Toutlet,capacitytest can be directly calculated without any iteration by
using Formula (36) derived from Formula (35) as follows:
Tinlet,capacitytest = Toutlet, average - ΔTrated × pl(Tj) × Pdesignh/Prated (36)

where
ΔTrated is the temperature difference at the standard rating conditions;
pl(Tj) is the part load ratio;
Pdesignh is the capacity at Tdesignh;
Prated is the rated capacity at the standard rating conditions.
NOTE Explanation of Formula (36)

CR = pl(Tj) × Pdesignh / Pdeclared

Fixed flow: qrated
Tinlet,capacitytest = Toutlet, average - ΔTrated × pl(Tj) × Pdesignh / Prated = Toutlet, average - ΔTrated × CR × Pdeclared /
Prated
Tinlet,capacitytest = Toutlet, average - ΔTrated × CR × qrated × cp × (Toutlet,capacitytest - Tinlet,capacitytest)/
qrated × cp × ΔTrated
Tinlet,capacitytest = Toutlet, average - CR × (Toutlet,capacitytest - Tinlet,capacitytest)
Toutlet, average = Tinlet,capacitytest + CR × (Toutlet,capacitytest - Tinlet,capacitytest)

11.5.2 Air-to-air and water(brine)-to-air units – Determination of the degradation coefficient Cd

11.5.2.1 General

When there is a cooling/heating demand, the compressor is on and the total power input includes all
electrical auxiliary devices (electronics, fans, liquid pump etc.).
Once the set point is reached, the cooling/heating demand is satisfied. The compressor is then off but
there is still a remaining power input due to the auxiliary devices (electronics, fans, liquid pump etc.).
The degradation coefficient is due to two effects:
1) the power input of the unit when the compressor is off;

2) the pressure equalization that reduces the cooling/heating capacity when the unit is restarted.

For determining the degradation coefficient Cd, the unit is cycled on for 6 min and then off for 24 min
for an approximately 20 % part load by switching on and off the compressor.
If it is not possible to make the measurements with the required uncertainty of measurement when
using a cycling interval of 6/24 min, then another cycling interval shall be chosen but not representing a
greater part load ratio than 50 % (i.e. 10/10 min).
During this cyclic test, the delivered cooling (heating) energy is measured over at least four on/off
cycles. Then the cyclic efficiency (cooling: EERcyc or heating: COPcyc) is obtained by dividing this cycling
interval cooling (heating) energy by the energy consumption of the unit over the same on/off cycles.
The degradation coefficient Cd for the cooling mode is calculated according to Formula (37):
EERcyc
1−
EERcontinuous
Cd = (37)
Pcyc
1−
Pcontinuous

where
EERcyc is the cyclic energy efficiency ratio;
EERcontinuous is the continuous energy efficiency ratio;
Pcyc is the time averaged cooling capacity during cycling, expressed in kW;
Pcontinuous is the time averaged cooling capacity that would have been delivered by the
unit, expressed in kW.

The degradation coefficient Cd for the heating mode is calculated according to Formula (38):
COPcyc
1−
COPcontinuous
Cd = (38)
Pcyc
1−
Pcontinuous

where
COPcyc is the cyclic coefficient of performance;
COPcontinuous is the continuous coefficient of performance;
Pcyc is the time averaged heating capacity during cycling, expressed in kW;
Pcontinuous is the time averaged heating capacity that would have been delivered by the
unit, expressed in kW.

If the degradation coefficient Cd has been determined for cooling mode, it can be applied for heating
mode and vice versa.
If the degradation coefficient Cd is not measured, a default value of 0,25 shall be used.
The temperature conditions at which the cyclic tests shall be performed are given below for each type
of unit and mode.

11.5.3 Air-to-water(brine), water(brine)-to-water(brine) and DX-to-water(brine) units –
Determination of the degradation coefficient Cd

For these units, the degradation due to the pressure equalization effect when the unit restarts can be
considered as negligible.
The only effect that will impact the EER/COP when cycling is the remaining power input when the
compressor is switching off.
The electrical power input during the compressor-off state of the unit is measured during 5 min after
the compressor has been switched off for 10 min after the end of the part load test for which the Cd
degradation coefficient shall be determined. The compressor shall be switched off by lowering the
setpoint in heating mode and by increasing the setpoint in cooling mode.
NOTE The change of the setpoint can be achieved by changing the heat curve or the indoor temperature
setpoint.

The degradation coefficient (Cd) is determined for each part load ratio by Formula (39):

PCoff
Cd = 1−
PCon (39)

where
PCoff is the effective power input during compressor-off state;
PCon is the effective power input measured during the corresponding part
load test.

In order to measure a power input that is consistent with the definition of the effective power input, if
the liquid pump or the fan is an integral part of the unit and in operation during compressor-off state,
the available static pressure shall also be measured and the total compressor-off power input be
corrected from the power input of the liquid pump or fan to provide this available static pressure, as
described in EN 14511-3. In case the correction obtains a larger value than the measured value for the
electric power input during compressor-off state, then the electric power input during compressor off
state is set to zero.
If the liquid pump or fan is not an integral part of the unit, the compressor-off power input shall be
corrected from the fraction of the pump or fan power input that is necessary to overcome the internal
static pressure difference as described in EN 14511-3, in order to measure a pump or fan power input
that is consistent with the definition of effective power input. To determine if the liquid pump or fan is
operating the control signal shall be measured. If no control signal is available, it shall be assumed that
the liquid pump or fan is operating.
If the degradation coefficient Cd is not measured, a default value of 0,9 shall be used.
11.6 Test procedure for staged and variable capacity units
11.6.1 General

There are two alternative methods:

— the settings for operating the unit at the required capacity ratio are made available by the
manufacturer upon request;

— using a compensation method when these settings are not made available by the manufacturer
when requested.

11.6.2 Settings for the required capacity ratio

The capacity ratio to be tested shall be set according to the instructions of the manufacturer. The
manufacturer shall provide laboratories with the necessary information on the setting of the unit for
operating at the required capacity conditions upon request. Contact information to obtain such
information shall be provided in both user's manual and website of the manufacturer or importer.
The unit shall operate continuously during the part load test. The only discontinuity allowed is the
defrost cycle of a unit.
For variable capacity units, if the manufacturer gives instructions for the settings for each rating
condition, these settings shall be done.
To set up a system with staged or variable capacity control, skilled personnel with knowledge of control
software may be required. The manufacturer or his nominated agent should be in attendance when the
system is being installed and prepared for tests.

11.6.3 Compensation method

Alternatively, when it is not possible to get the information necessary for the test, compensation system
may be used.
For air-to-water(brine), water(brine)-to-water(brine) and DX-to-water(brine) units, the compensation
system shall allow setting of the required capacity ratio within ± 10 %. Examples of such compensation
systems for part load tests in heating and cooling mode are given in Annex M.
The setting of the thermostat on the indoor water(brine) side shall be as given by the manufacturer. The
test shall be performed in accordance with EN 14511-3 considering the admissible deviations,
individual uncertainties of measurement and data acquisition. Cooling/heating capacity and power
input are obtained by time integration over a number of complete stabilized cycles of energy balance
and energy consumption. The measured cooling capacity or heating capacity shall be corrected for the
heat from the circulating pump, in accordance with EN 14511-3. The effective power input shall be
obtained from the measured power input and the corrections from the heat from the circulating
pump(s) and/or fan, if any.

12 Test methods for electric power input during thermostat-off mode, standby
mode and crankcase heater mode and off mode
12.1 Uncertainties of measurement

The maximum uncertainty of the measurement of the power input for off, thermostat-off, standby and
crankcase heater modes shall be:
—0,3 W up to 10 W,

—3 % for powers greater than 10 W.

12.2 Measurement of electric power input during thermostat-off mode

In cooling mode, after the unit has been running for 30 min in “D” test condition, the thermostat set
point related to the indoor temperature sensor is increased until all compressors stop. The time-
averaged power input of the unit is measured over a time period of 60 min starting 10 min after the
compressor stops. The standby power input (see 12.2) is deducted from this measured power input to
determine the thermostat-off power input.
In heating mode, the same principle applies but the thermostat set point should be decreased until the
compressor stops after the unit has been running for 30 min in “D” test condition. No deduction of the
standby power input shall be made for the heating mode, but the measured total power input shall be
considered as the thermostat-off power input.
In case the unit is not controlled by an indoor sensor but by a heat curve related to the outdoor
temperature, an increase in the outdoor temperature shall be simulated. This can either be done by
increasing the local temperature around the outdoor sensor, e.g. putting it into a water bath, or by
replacing it by a resistor. The simulated outdoor temperature shall be increased until the compressor
stops.
In order to measure a power input that is consistent with the definition of the effective power input, if
the liquid pump or the fan is an integral part of the unit and in operation during thermostat-off mode,
the available static pressure shall also be measured and the total thermostat-off power input be
corrected from the power input of the liquid pump or fan to provide this available static pressure, as
described in EN 14511-3. In case the correction obtains a larger value than the measured value for the
electric power input during thermostat-off mode, then the electric power input during thermostat-off
mode is set to zero.

If the liquid pump or fan is not an integral part of the unit, the thermostat-off power input shall be
corrected from the fraction of the pump or fan power input that is necessary to overcome the internal
static pressure difference as described in EN 14511-3. To determine if the liquid pump or fan is
operating, the control signal shall be measured. If no control signal is available, it shall be assumed that
the liquid pump or fan is operating.
12.3 Measurement of the electric power input during standby mode

In cooling mode, after the unit has been running for 30 min in “D” test condition, the unit is stopped
with the control device. After 10 min, the residual energy consumption is measured during the next
10 minutes and assumed to be the standby mode consumption. The standby mode power input is the
ratio of the measured energy consumption and the duration of test.
In heating mode, the measurements are done in the same way after the unit has been running for
30 min in “D” test condition.
In case it is not possible to stop the unit by any control device, the standby mode power input is set
equal to the thermostat-off mode power input.
12.4 Measurement of the electric power input during crankcase heater mode

In heating mode, after the unit has been running for 30 min in “D” test condition the unit is stopped
with the control device, and the energy consumption of the unit shall be measured for 8 h starting
10 min after all compressors stop. The power input in crankcase heater mode is the ratio of the
measured energy consumption and the duration of the test.
In cooling mode after the unit has been running for 30 min in “D” test condition the unit is stopped with
the control device, and the energy consumption of the unit shall be measured for 8 h starting 10 min
after the compressor stops. The power input in crankcase heater mode is the ratio of the measured
energy consumption and the duration of the test.
The standby power input is deducted from this measured power input to determine the crankcase
heater operation power input.
12.5 Measurement of the electric power input during off mode

Following the standby mode test, the unit shall be switched in off mode while remaining plugged. After
10 min, the residual power input is measured during the next 10 min and the average value during this
period is assumed to be the off mode power input.
In case no off mode switch is available on the unit (e.g. on the indoor unit(s) for split units), the off
mode power input is supposed to be equal to the standby mode power input. In case it is neither
possible to set the unit in off mode nor in standby mode then the off mode power input is assumed to be
equal to the thermostat-off mode power input.

13 Test report
The test report shall contain general and additional information specified in EN 14511-3 or
EN 15879-1. In addition, for hybrid heat pumps the test method that has been applied shall be stated.
It shall also include the results of the part load test(s) and the calculation of EER or COP.
If calculation of seasonal space cooling/heating efficiency, SEER/SCOP and SEERon/SCOPon/SCOPnet or
seasonal energy performance ratio SEPR are included, they shall be based on the results of these tests.

Annex F
(informative)

Determination of water(brine) temperature for fixed capacity units with

variable outlet temperature

F.1General
Part load conditions are based on a target part load capacity and an outlet average temperature.
For units able to achieve the target part load capacity in a continuous way, tests can be done by directly
setting the conditions specified in the table of part load conditions, as applicable. The outlet average
temperature is equal to the outlet water temperature measured during the tests.
For a fixed capacity unit or a variable capacity unit running in on/off cycles, when the compressor is not
running, the outlet temperature is equal to the inlet temperature of the unit. To compensate this low
temperature when the compressor is off, the outlet temperature when the compressor is running has to
be higher than that of a continuous operating variable capacity unit to achieve the same average water
outlet temperature, as specified in the tables of part load conditions as applicable.

F.2Test procedure for an air-to-water unit with fixed water flow rate
An example on how the iterative process with formula (35) shall be used is given as follows:
Rated capacity @ 7/47–55 °C (EN 14511-2): 53 kW
Fixed water flow rate: 53 / (8 × 4,186) = 1,58 kg/s
Part load @D condition: 6,20 kW
Toutlet, average = 30 °C (outlet variable temperature from Table 10)

Test n°1
Toutlet,capacitytest 30 °C

CR = 6,2 / 58 0,107 -
Toutlet,average using formula (34) =21,24 + (30 - 21,24) × 0,107 22,18 °C
ΔToutlet,average =30 - 22,28 7,82 K
corrected Toutlet,capacitytest =30 + 7,82 37,82 °C

Toutlet,average using formula (34) = 28,97 + (37,22 - 28,97) × 0,114 29,91 °C
ΔToutlet,average = 30 – 29,91 0,09 K
corrected Toutlet,capacitytest = 37,22 + 0,09 37,31 °C
The difference between the two last values of the corrected Toutlet,capacitytest is smaller than the allowable
deviation as specified in EN 14511-3.
Therefore, the iterative process is ended and the measurements of Test n°3 are the final results.

F.3Test procedure for an air-to-water unit with variable water flow rate
An example on how the iterative process with formula (35) shall be used is given as follows:
Rated capacity @ 7/47–55 °C (EN 14511-2): 53 kW
Fixed temperature difference: 8K
Part load @D condition: 6,20 kW
Toutlet, average = 30°C (outlet variable temperature from Table 10)

measured capacity 58 kW
CR = 6,2 / 58 0,107 -
Toutlet,average using formula (34) =22 + (30 - 22) × 0,107 22,86 °C
ΔToutlet,average = 30 – 22,86 7,14 K
corrected Toutlet,capacitytest = 30 + 7,14 37,14 °C

Test n°2
Toutlet,capacitytest 37,14 °C
Tinlet,capacity test 29,14 °C
measured capacity 54 kW
CR = 6,2 / 54 0,115 -
Toutlet,average using formula (34) = 29,14 + (37,14 – 29,14) × 0,115 30,06 °C
ΔToutlet,average = 30 – 30,06 −0,06 K
corrected Toutlet,capacitytest = 37,12 + (−0,06) 37,08 °C

The difference between the two last values of the corrected Toutlet,capacitytest is smaller than the allowable
deviation as specified in EN 14511-3.
Therefore, the iterative process is ended and the measurements of Test n°2 are the final results.
In case the variable water flow rate to set is lower than the minimum value declared by the
manufacturer, this minimum water flow rate shall be used and the iterative process as described in F.2
applied.

Annex M
(informative)

Compensation methods for air-to-water(brine) and water(brine)-to-

water(brine) units

M.1 General
This annex provides examples of compensation systems that can be used for the part load tests of air-
to-water(brine) and water(brine)-to-water units in cooling and heating mode.

M.2 Compensation system for reduced capacity test in cooling mode

The unit under test is installed in a closed test rig that includes:
— a variable resistance electrical heater, to compensate for the cooling capacity of the air-to-
water(brine) unit,

— one or more storage tanks, for simulating the inertia of real applications (10 l/kW to 30 l/kW),

as described in Figure M.1.

Figure M.1 — Test installation for part load testing cooling

The resistance of the electrical heater is set to provide the required part load ratio.

M.3 Compensation system for reduced capacity test in heating mode

The air-to-water(brine) unit is connected to an oversized fan-coil cooler installed in a second test room
(see Figure M.2). If the cooler fan speed can be adjusted via frequency control, there are two means of
controlling the heating duty: fan speed and room air temperature.

Figure M.2 — Test installation for part load testing heating

The test shall be performed in accordance with EN 14511-3 considering the admissible deviations, and
uncertainties of measurement.
A sampling interval of 15 s at the most is required in order to have real-time measurement of the duties
(heating capacity and electrical duty). Due to water(brine) temperature cycling during the test, the
heating capacity and the power input shall be obtained from a time-integration of the energy balance on
several cycles.

3. Indoor units of the same capacity shall be taken to reach:

• a system capacity ratio of 100 % ± 5 % based on the cooling mode for cooling only units and
reversible units. For reversible units in heating mode the same combination shall be chosen;

• a system capacity ratio in heating of 100 % ± 5 % based on the heating mode for heating only
units.

If this ratio cannot be reached, other capacities as close as possible can be chosen to reach the ratio.

— outdoor cooling / heating capacity: PC,outdoor, PH,outdoor;

— outdoor power input in cooling/heating mode: PE, outdoor;

— outdoor energy efficiency ratio: EERoutdoor;

— outdoor energy efficiency ratio: COPoutdoor.

N.4 Calculation of the SEER based on the EERoutdoor

For the calculation of the SEER of multisplit air conditioners, the calculations described in Clause 5 shall
be used, however, the EERd is the EERoutdoor corresponding to the declared capacity (Pdc) of the outdoor
unit at the same temperature conditions as for full load condition A and part load conditions B, C and D

N.5 Calculation of the SCOP based on the COPoutdoor

For the calculation of the SCOP of multisplit heat pumps, the calculations described in Clause 8 shall be
used. However, the COPd is the COPoutdoor, corresponding to the declared capacity (Pdh) of the outdoor
unit at the same temperature conditions as for part load conditions A to G, where applicable.
