DIPHTHONGS

?What are diphthongs

Are Sounds which consist of a movement or glide
.from one vowel to another
The most important thing to remember about all
the diphthongs is that the first part is much longer
.and stronger than the second part
For example (Eye) ai
the total number of diphthongs is eight(8)*
The easiest way to remember them is in terms of *
.three groups: Centre and close
:FIRST GROUP
The centering diphthongs glide towards the
∂.(schwa) vowel
i∂(:schwa): as in bread, Ian, ear, near, here,-1
.idiot
.e∂(schwa):as in hair, fair, aired, scared-2
.u∂(schwa):as in tour, poor, four, store, moored-3

:SECOND GROUP
They all end with a glide towards a closer vowel.
Because the second part of the diphthong is weak,
they often do not reach a position that could be
.called close
The most important thing is that a glide from a
relatively more open towards a relatively more
.closer vowel is produced
Three diphthongs glide to i
.ei:as in paid, pain, face, day,aid-1
.ↄi:as in oil, boy, voice, noise -3
:THIRD GROUP
Two diphthongs glide towards U, so that as the
tongue moves closer to the roof of the mouth
there is at the same time a rounding movement of
the lips. The movement is not a large one, again
.because the second part of the diphthong is weak
U: the lips may be slightly rounded in∂-1
anticipation of the glide towards U, for which
.there is quite noticeable lip-rounding
au:in this diphthongs the end of the diphthong-2
being somewhere between close- mid and open-
mid in tongue height. There is only slight lip
.rounding. As in ( loud, house, gown)
