Generally the climate of the town is
hot. The general wind direction is
from west. ·

4. BRIEF HISTORY : There. is no specific history· of this


town. However there is a Samadhi of
great Maratha Warrior, Veer Prataprao
Gujar and it is located in this region
only at a distance of about 10 km.from
the town. Towards the south of this
town, there exists famous Samangad
where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and
his Guru Samartha Ramdas Swami had
met. There is an interesting tale
about the name Gadhinglaj of the town.
\¥hen the· Fort Samangad was won, the
people shouted "Gad Jinkala", 11 Gad
Jinkala" (i.e. Fort is won). The same
words were sub·sequently corrupted as
Gadhinglaj and the village situated at
the foot of this fort came to be known
as Gadhinglaj.

approachable by road running from
Nipani and Chikodi towns of Karnataka
State. Hatkanangale, a tahsil place

the South-Central Railway to
Ichalkaranji which is situated
towards north at a distance of
9.6 km. by road.
The civic administration is
governed by a Municipal Council
fUnctioning under the Maharashtra
Municipalities Act,1965. It has

Generally the climate of
Ichalkaranji is dry and salu-
brious.
4. BRIEF HISTORY : Ichalkaranji was the capital of
the feudatory Chief of Ichal-
karanji Jahagir in erstwhile
Kolhapur State. In the year
!730 A.D.Chhatrapati Shahu
Maharaj of Satara granted this
village to Shrimant Vyankatrac
Narayan, son of Naro Mahadeo
Joshi-Ghorpade, the founder of
IchalkB~anji dynasty. Till the
year 1949, it was under the
control of the Princely State
of Kolhapur after which it
was merged in the old Bombay
State. In the year 1730 it was
a purely s~~l agriculturgl
Village situated to the ~orth
of Panchaganga river. In 1891,
~he Chief of Ichalkaranji
Jahagir constructed a palace of
lndo-Sarcenic architecture.

~on Kolhapur-Pune broad gauge railway
line of the South Central Railway
line. The town of Jaysingpur is
situated on the eastern boundary of
Kolhapur District on Kolhapur-Sangli
State Highway.
The civic affairs of the town
are managed by a Municipal Council
established in 1942. The area I

river which is about a mile south

rich agricultural lands. The town
is divided into two parts by a
nallah. The part on tlf.e south of
the nallah is the old town which is

Kurundwad Municipal Council was
established in 1883 and is presently
governed under the Maharashtra

3. GEOGRAPHICAL .• The river Panchaganga is passing

the river Krishna at Narsobawadi

4. BRIEF HISTORY .• Kurundwad town was in the form of


.a small hamlet in Kolhapur .State
before 1784. Senapati Kapshikar
· gifted this town to Patwardhans in,
1784 and ·Patwardhan family .ruled .
here.as a capital city of their
_estate. The development of the. town
"Kurundwad was then accelerated by
P~twardhan family. In 1860, the
' 'market lane 1 and the habitat ion
nam~d 1_chilki 1 came into existence. -
_;:rhe ,.Patwardhan family constructed
a Rajwada, Vishnu Temple and Ghat
on Krishna river during the period
.from 1792 to 1802. The Post Office
was opened in the town in 1873-74 •
