The words and phrases that you just practiced teaching are from a story in English
for Today, class 3. It can be sometimes a good idea to teach vocabulary to your
students before they read a text (remember that this is called pre-teaching
vocabulary).

❑ Pre-teaching: Teaching words or language before students listen to (or read)

a text .

1.Why do you think it is sometimes a good idea to pre-teach

vocabulary?
2.Is it important to teach all of the new words and phrases in a
text?
3.With which texts is it a good idea to pre-teach vocabulary?
4.At what stage of a reading lesson would you pre-teach
vocabulary?
▪ Why do you think it is sometimes a good idea to
pre-teach vocabulary?
Answer: Some texts in English for Today(notably class 3;4 and 5) are
long and have many words and phrases that students may not have
seen before. Readers can cope with texts that have some new words
and phrases, but If there are too many , then text can be very
difficult to understand
and students could feel anxious, bored or demotivated . If you teach
some of the words and phrases before students read a text , it can
help students to understand the text better and reading becomes
more motivating.
❖Is it important to teach all of the new words and phrases in a text?
If there are a lot of words and phrases in a text , you may not want to pre-teach all
of them. It is difficult for students to learn a large number of words and phrases. It
is best to pre-teach the key words and phrases , ones that are the most important
for understanding the text or story. Also, if we always teach or explain every
single new words and phrase for our students then they may not develop
strategies for dealing with new words. As students start to read more complex
texts , they will meet several new words and phrases and will need to know how
to deal with these. Such strategies could be:
▪ Learning not to be anxious about understanding every new word in the text – as
we have seen , it is not always important to understand every single words and
phrases, often it is enough to understand the basic meaning of the text .
▪ Guessing what words and phrases mean by using the meaning of the text so
far, the words and phrases around the unknown word; possible visual clues.
▪ Learning how to find out about words independently, for example using a
dictionary.
❑With which texts is it a good idea to pre-
teach vocabulary?

It is a good idea to pre-teach vocabulary when the

text are longer and have a large number of new
words and phrases.
❑ At what stage of a reading lesson would you pre-
teach vocabulary?

You would pre-teach vocabulary before students

begin to read-the pre-reading stage of the lesson.
❖How do the students expand , record and remember new words?
Here are some suggestions for helping students to expand, record and remember
words. These activities are particularly suitable for primary aged-learner.
➢ Write key new words on one section on the board, and leave them there for the
lesson. This help students understand which words are more important to
learn.
➢ Write words on pieces of paper or card and keep them in an invelop, box or
bag. You can use these words for games, or students can look at them and test
themselves.
➢ Make posters and collages around particular topics(for example, classroom
objects, days of the week, animals and so on)
➢ Show children how to learn words from lists, and encourage children to test
each other.
➢ Regularly remind children of the new words that they have learned.
➢ Encourage older primary students to keep a vocabulary book. They can add
words alphabetically or according to topics.
Observe: The next time you are at your school placement note how
the teacher uses texts in the classroom:

➢ Does the teacher read aloud, or does he/she encourage silent

reading?
➢ Does the teacher include three clear stages (pre-reading; while-
reading; post-reading)?

➢ Does the teacher pre-teach vocabulary? How does the teacher

help students deal with the vocabulary in texts?
❖ Questions related to the topic
