CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKROUND
I. INTRODUCTION
Due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, many activities are restrictedly
done face-to-face. One of this, the face-to-face method of education, Due to these
problem, the Department of Education (DepEd). Has applied distance learning
modalities to ensure learning continuity, which involved technology and internet
connection.
Online learning is a method of education whereby students learn in a fully
virtual environment. First introduced in the 1990s with the creation of the internet and
utilized in distance learning, online learning (also called e-learning) is most prevalent
in higher education, enabling students from different geographical areas to engage
with an academic institution and other students online and learn flexibly, at their own
pace, while working towards a degree or certificate.
Online learning refers to an internet-based learning environment that can
connect students of diverse backgrounds who boast different perspectives. A higher
education institution will use a learning management system, or LMS, to facilitate
online learning, which can take the form of asynchronous learning (where students are
not required to be online at the same time, and utilize discussion threads and e-mails
to complete coursework) or synchronous learning (where students must be online at
the same time).
Online Education enables that teacher and the students to set their own learning
pace, and there’s the added flexibility of setting a schedule that fits everyone’s
agenda. As a result, using an online educational platform allows for a better balance
of work and studies, so there’s no need to give anything up. Studying online teaches
you vital time management skills which makes finding a good work study balance
easier. Having a common agenda between the student and teacher can also prompt
both parties to accept new responsibilities and have more autonomy.
4
Aside from the good effect of online learning there are some problems faced by
students like Adaptability Struggle, Technical issues, Computer Literacy, Time
management, self-motivation. This common problems can be solved through proper
initiatives for the students future benefits.
1.Adaptability Struggle. Switching from traditional classroom and face to face
instructor training to computer-based training in a virtual classroom makes the
learning experience entirely different for students. Their resistance to change doesn’t
allow them to adapt to the online learning environment, whereas it takes time for them
to get accustomed to Course Management Systems (CMS) and the methods of
computer-based education. While passive listening and notes taking are expected in a
traditional classroom, online discussions or creating a web page demand springing
into action. Students with a “traditional” mindset find it difficult to adapt; however,
they need to accept the new learning circumstances with an open mind and heart.
Understanding the benefits of eLearning and even discussing them with their peers
may change this mindset and better prepare students for online classes.
2. Technical Issues. Many students are not provided with the high bandwidth or the
strong internet connection that online courses require, and thus fail to catch up with
their virtual classmates: Their weak monitors make it hard to follow the Course
Management System and their learning experience becomes problematic. Moreover,
most of them live off campus and find it difficult to keep in tune with the technical
requirements of the chosen course. Some of them don’t even own computers and seek
help in Learning Resource Centers for technical assistance. The only solution to this
problem is knowing exactly what kind of technological support they will need for a
certain course before enrolling in it, as well as properly equipping themselves for the
course’s successful completion.
3. Computer Literacy. Although students are generally tech savvy, and thus able to
manage computers well, lack of computer literacy is a major issue among students
today. Many of them cannot operate basic programs such as Microsoft Word and
PowerPoint and therefore are not able to handle their files. Furthermore, many
5
students find fixing basic computer problems troublesome, as they have no knowledge
in this area. However, technological proficiency is a must for following online
courses, as it enables students to manage their assignments and courseware in an
organized
manner without struggling. Basic courses in computer literacy enhance students’
knowledge in the field; having a fundamental knowledge of computer hardware
would help them participate in online classes without interruptions and hindrances.
4. Time Management. Time management is a difficult task for e-learners, as online
courses require a lot of time and intensive work. Furthermore, whereas it is mostly
adults who prefer web-based learning programs for their place and time flexibility,
they rarely have the time to take the courses due to their various everyday
commitments. A regular schedule planner would be a significant help to these
learners, as they could even set reminders for their courses and assignments.
5. Self-Motivation. Self-motivation is an e-Learning essential requirement; however,
many online learners lack it, much to their surprise. After enrolling in distance
learning courses, many learners fall behind and nurture the idea of giving up, as
difficulties in handling a technolo gical medium also seem insurmountable. Students
need to find the motivation to follow the new educational trends and also properly
equip themselves for future challenges in their education and careers. Only a positive
attitude will help them overcome the challenges in e-Learning; though this is hard to
practice, students need to understand that it is necessary in order to reap the e-
Learning’s benefits in the future.

10
CHAPTER II
E-Learning is a World Wide Web and interest in asynchronous discussion
groups. The goal of e-learning described here is to create a community of inquiry
independent of time and location through the use of information and communications
technology. Its reflects a particular educational approach using the possibilities of new
and emerging technologies to build collaborative constructively learning
communities. E-Learning is formally define as technologically mediated
asynchronous and synchronous communication for the purpose of constructing and
confirming knowledge.
Fully online learning is a form of distance education that had its genesis apart
from mainstream distance education. However, because of its interactive nature,
online learning is very different from traditional distance education with its historical
focus on content delivery and independent learning. On the other hand, blended
learning is the most prevalent form of e-learning in traditional higher education
institutions in terms of trans-formative course and program redesign. It is a hybrid
model, either the face-to-face or the online elements may be dominant. While e-
learning has an element of distance education, it has evolved from a different field of
theory and practice. Distance has become but a relatively minor structural constraint
in providing a quality, highly interactive learning experience.
E-learning is a virtual learning emphasises the importance of the connection
between students and their teachers. The power of blending online and face-to-face
experiences is that it respects the distinct advantages and preferences associated with
face-to-face learning communities while recognizing and integrating the enormous
strengths of online learning to provide sustained, rigorous discourse. The potential of
e-learning to merge verbal and written discourse, unconstrained by time, has caused
educators to rethink the possibilities for engaging campus-based students in face-to-
face and online environments.
E-learning in the form of blended learning integrates the best features of
online and face-to-face education. Blended learning, however, is not benign. It will
inherently precipitate a fundamental rethinking and questioning of current approaches
to teaching and learning. Approaches such as the lecture are critically examined in
terms of its ability to engage students in critical discourse. To this point, e-learning
has been described in terms of online and blended learning. It has also been argued
11
that e-learning is not a synonym for distance education. With the proliferation of
Internet technologies, distance has become relatively meaningless.
E-learning scenario communities of learners are able to sustain themselves
productively across time and space and be enriched immeasurably through the
Internet. But this does not just happen by adopting e-learning technologies. It is the
ideas that drive this vision, and the core concept here is the community of inquiry. It
is this vision and theoretical framework that provide the principles and guidelines that
make e-learning a viable reality in higher education.
E-Learning can produce great results by decreasing costs and improving
performance. Also, unlike a onetime classroom session, the e-learning course is
available for others. This includes the static e-learning course as well as any
ongoing conversations in networked communities.
One of the advantages of e learning is Increased productivity. e-learning is not
bound by geography or time, you can control training’s impact on production by
training people during down times. In addition, with the current economy, you’re
asking people to do more with less. So e-learning is a great way to give them the tools
and skills needed to enhance their performance. Second is, Standardization that E-
learning allows you to create a standardized process and consistency in the delivery of
content. It also compresses delivery time. Third is, Real-time access, Live learning
events require that those who participate align their schedules to the training calendar.
E-learning eliminates this because the course can be accessed anytime, anywhere.
This can also happen without Internet access. Forth is, Personalized Learning that
students they express their curiosity and put forth their best work using tools and
strategies that highlight their abilities rather than illuminate their disabilities. Fifth is,
Knowledge management, Many people see e-learning as only the authored courses.
But e-learning includes all sort of online technologies. If you incorporate some of the
tools that allow collaboration and conversation, you can capture organizational
knowledge that is available for future learners. Sixth is the Encourage sharing- The
foundation of a learning community is built on sharing what you know with others.
This is where incorporating a forum or wiki really adds value to your e-learning.
