Part A
(1) Supposed a thermocouple is placed in a vessel to measure the temperature of the process
fluid in the vessel. What is the heat transfer mode from the fluid to the thermocouple tip?
(A) Conduction
(B) Convection
(C) Radiation
(2 marks)
(2) In a bimetallic temperature transducer, when the temperature element is exposed to heat,
it will bent towards
(3) What is the relationship between the frequency of the vortices and the fluid velocity?
(4) The reason why thermistors are not widely used in process measurements is because
(5) What will happen to liquid flowing in Venturi flow meter after is comes out of the
Venturi throat?.
(2 marks)
Part B
(6) A factory is involved in metal processing operation. The operation sometimes reach a
temperature of 4000 ⁰C.
(a) What is the most suitable temperature transducer for this operation?
(b) Why is the sensor suggested in (a) is suitable?
(c) How does the temperature transducer suggested in (a) measures temperature?
(d) Can a thermistor be used for such operation?
(e) Give a reason for your answer in (c).
(10 marks)
(7) An airline finds that the pitot tube of an aircraft gives incorrect result resulting in the
crash of one of its aircraft. What could possibly be the reasons for such mishap? Give at
least 5 reasons.
(5 marks)
(8) Dead weight testers are often used as primary standards which calibrate other pressure
instruments. Briefly discuss the main reason for the use of dead weight testers as the
primary standards for pressure calibration?
(5 marks)
Solution
(1) Conduction
(2) (B) The metal with higher coefficient of expansion
(3) Frequency is directly proportional to the fluid velocity
(4) Of its non linearity characteristic
(5) Velocity Increases
(6) (a) The most suitable temperature sensor for this operation is a
pyrometer.
(b) The sensor suggested in (a) is suitable because the temperature
is extremely high and a contact transducer is not suitable. As
such a pyrometer which is a non-contact transducer is
appropriate for this purpose.
(c) Extreme temperature emits radiation and pyrometer converts
this radiation into a corresponding temperature value.
(d) A thermistor cannot be used for such operation.
(e) The thermistor has a limited temperature range and it is a
contact temperature transducer.
(8) Deadweight testers are pressure calibration devices that use known,
traceable weights and precision machined piston and cylinder
assembly to check the accuracy of pressure gauges, sensors,
transmitters, and transducers. With unmatched accuracy, stability, and
repeatability; deadweight testers are universally accepted as the
standard for pressure calibration.
