Risk management in the Gym

As much as the gym is supposed to provide exercise services to improve health

outcomes, with the kind of equipment and activities in the fitness center, it may become a risk to

physical fitness if not well-managed. Risks in the gym can arise from various factors such as

inappropriate training which could harm the client, or improper use and storage of equipment

which could further pose a risk to the people in the room. To ensure a safe working environment

in the gym, three things are important, first making it spacious enough and outlining the

maximum number it can accommodate at any given time. Secondly there is need to consider a

spacious layout of the floor plan as well as maintaining an appropriate flooring. The equipment

in the gym must be well accessible to clients without being moved from one point to another.

Management of urgencies will be done through an elaborate chain of command. Among

the employee we will have at least one trainer who is trained in CPR and other emergency

response. This trainer will be in charge of any emergencies and will define the protocols to be

followed.

To further mitigate risks the gym will be equipped with Emergency Action Plan (EAP).

The EAP defined the specific actions that should be followed during workplace emergencies.

The document will contain four essential parts; evacuation procedures and escape routed in case

for an emergence, reporting and how to alert authorities and how the staff and clients will be

alerted of the emergencies. To further mitigate risk of fires the gym will have a yearly reviewed

fire risk assessment which identifies fire hazards, the most vulnerable people and methods to

reduce the risks. Documenting such risk management features will go a long way in mitigating

any possible risk in the establishment.
