Introduction
The switch of clothing from traditional ways into the modernized fashion moved in a rapid way.
As almost everything in this era follows the norm of the mainstream in its modernized and well-
civilized ways, the dressing styles of people somehow is also associated with this flow. Modem dress is
characterized by self-expression, innovation, and choice -in short, by "fashion." Fashion, in its tum, has been
associated with the liberal subject of modern democracy. Traditional dress is often described as based entirely
on conventions: people wear what they wear because that is what has always been worn. Studies of dress and
fashion often make two very basic assumptions: that dress is, at some level, a choice, and that dress is
fundamentally about asserting one’s identity to others (Deborah Durham 2008). In the modern sense, fashion
Modern clothing style is associated with fashion trends supported that people in this times wear clothes
based on what is being offered in the different fashion industry. As this rapid flow in the society increases so as
its effect to the modern democratic way of life of people in terms of clothing. The modern democratic style of
people as to the ways they dress themselves often imposes an idea that people is associated with freedom to
choose the type of fashion trends in clothing they want to wear. According to Svendsen (2006), Modifications
of dress and body can be deemed in this manner if the end result is a dramatic change such that others feel the
person is masking their true self. “Clothes rewrite the body, give it a different shape, and a different
expression” The impact of this can be boiled down to an idea that democracy in this era impacts the clothing
choice of people and that the dressing decisions of people affects the society in terms of fashion standards.
But as fashion clothing trends becomes the mainstream, so as it affects the decisions of people. The
identified problem in this study focuses on the bad and good effects of modernization to the aspect of people’s
choice in fashion clothing. According to Saravanan & Nithyaprakash (2015), fashion communication, unlike
verbal communication, messages transmitted through fashion symbols are often emotional impressions or,
what Hoffmann (1984) called "illusions". In other words they reflect the clothing attitude of the person. The
researcher aims to identify if this democratic fashion trends has a negative and/or positive impact to people
