and the perceptions of the relationships he
has with others and the other aspects of
life. Carl Rogers has contributed
significantly towards the Self theory.

THE FOUR
CONCEPTS OF
THE SELF

1. Self-image
2. Ideal Self
3. Looking Glass Self
4. Real Self
SELF-IMAGE
SELF-IMAGE
Can be characterized as a set of beliefs
about one’s self. It is the impression
you have of yourself that forms a
collective representation of your assets
and liabilities.
2 TYPES OF SELF-
IMAGE

Unhealthy Self-Image
Healthy Self-Image
IDEAL SELF
IDEAL SELF
It is very much different from the self-
image, as it shows the ideal position
perceived by an individual, whereas the
selfimage is the reality that an individual
perceives.
LOOKING GLASS
SELF
LOOKING
GLASS SELF
Characterized as an individual’s
perception of how others are
perceiving his qualities or feeling
about him.
REAL SELF
Wow! You look so
beautiful Rose.

Tell me
something I don't
know, but anyways,
thanks Ben.
REAL SELF
What others show you with
respect to your self-image. The
real self is who we actually are.
