Maintenance Work on Plant


POTENTIAL RISK: ELECTROCUTION
Can occur if plant has not been totally de-energised prior to maintenance work and remain isolated for the
duration of the maintenance process.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

 Supervisors and responsible persons shall ensure that plant and equipment has been isolated before work
commences and stays isolated for the duration of the job.
 Supervisors shall ensure that a "Safe System Of Work" is implemented and personnel are aware of the
system's procedures.
 Employers shall ensure that suitable and sufficient inspection schedule is in place.
 All personnel shall ensure that all plant and equipment is given visual examination prior to use.

POTENTIAL RISK: TRAPS AND/OR ENTANGLEMENT

Can occur if plant has not been totally de-energised prior to maintenance work and remain isolated for the
duration of the maintenance process.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

 Supervisors and responsible persons shall ensure that plant and equipment has been isolated before
maintenance work commences and stays isolated for the duration of the work.
 Test shall be carried out on plant to ensure that all plant and equipment has been totally de-energised
before work commences.
 Supervisors and/or responsible persons shall ensure that a "Safe System Of Work" is in place during the
maintenance process and documented.
 No work shall be carried out on live equipment.

POTENTIAL RISK: FIRE AND/OR EXPLOSION

• Can occur during maintenance work if all sources of ignition have not been adequately controlled around
plant containing flammable material (i.e. diesel, condensate, etc).

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

 Supervisors and/or responsible persons shall ensure that a "Safe System Of Work" is in place during
the maintenance process and documented.
 Personnel shall ensure that all flammable/combustible and waste materials have been removed.
 Sufficient fire fighting appliances shall be located around the place of work and personnel are trained
in the use and awareness of fire emergency procedures.
POTENTIAL RISK: HUMAN ERROR
Accidents can occur if personnel undertaking the maintenance task are not suitable trained or have sufficient
knowledge to enable them to complete the task safely.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

 Supervisors and/or responsible persons shall ensure that personnel undertaking any maintenance task are
adequately trained and have sufficient knowledge to enable them to safely carry out task.
 Supervisors and/or responsible persons shall ensure that personnel who are not "competent" are not
permitted to carry out any maintenance work.
