Background of the study

According to Davis (2018), young people must be aware of political issues and
information to comprehend what is occurring around them and how it will affect their lives as the
nation's best hope. As a caten, it is crucial to be aware of the various events your country has
been experiencing. However, despite the significance of political awareness, younger generations
are especially susceptible to the ignorance trap and political conflict since they frequently fail to
follow politics. This provides the impression that young people don't care about national policy
since they are uninformed of it (Anderson, 2018). A study conducted by Ahmed et al. (2017)
demonstrated that Pakistani secondary school students have a poor level of political awareness.
In addition, Ogunlade and Yuna (2015) found that the overall level of political awareness among
secondary is poor. Furthermore, several studies have demonstrated that there are variables that
can influence a student.

Discussion, knowledge, and awareness of political laws. Also, recent studies cited by
Fraile (2014) indicate that women appear to participate differently than men in terms of political
participation, indicating that women are more politically aware than men. The study revealed
that there is a gender difference and a correlation between their gender and their political
awareness. Dennis (2018) students need to be taught about politics so that they can develop
strong characters, and they should be encouraged to voice their political opinions both on and off
campus. Political awareness among students, according to Suhakam – Malaysian Human Rights
Commission, is a good thing (Ward 2019). It has been incorporated into the educational system
as a subject to increase youth awareness and knowledge of politics. It is included in the specified
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand under the K-12 program because it falls under
the branch of Social Science.

The reason that the researchers conducted this study is because they want to determine if
there is a significant relationship between the Political Awareness of HUMSS students in
(NAME OF SCHOOL) to their Academic Standing. This is primarily because of the increase
rate of political conflicts and issues in our country. The number of issues in the Philippines that
are related to politics are getting higher since the 2022 election. The issue was still on going and
the people are being open on their political standing and perspective. This is the reason why the
researchers conducted this study; it is to determine the political awareness and what are the
factors that affects it as perceived by the HUMSS students. The study will also determine the
academic standing of the students because this is a factor that will determine the correlation
between the two variables of the study. Lastly, the study will determine if there is a significant
relationship between the political awareness of the students regarding their academic standing to
humanities and social sciences major courses.

These determinants will be the key factor of the study because this will determine the
correlation between the two variables of the study that is being tested. The researchers also
choose this study because it is relevant to their current standing as a HUMSS student. They also
want to focus on topics that is connected to their future courses.
